1. The Art Institute of Chicago’s new photography exhibit “Never a Lovely So Real” takes its name from Nelson Algren’s 1951 book Chicago: City on the Make, and features works by artists documenting the changing face of the city in the latter half of the 20th century. The exhibit is included in the price of museum admission; hours today are 10:30am to 5pm.

2. See New York–based guitarist and experimental composer Yonatan Gat leading his eponymous trio at the Hideout. He’s joined by openers the Eternals and Health and Beauty; tickets for the 9pm show are just $12.

3. Hear five parents tell stories about the moment their child came into the world in Birth Day, a new entry into the live-lit scene that’s produced by Runcible Theatre Company. The show takes place at 7:30pm at the Hearty Boys Tasting Room in Buena Park, and tickets are $10.
