Donut Fest returned to 1st Ward yesterday and 11 local doughnut makers competed to see who makes the best fried dough in town. Participants included Scarfuri Bakery with a tiramisu bombolini, Beavers Donuts with strawberry cheesecake doughnuts and Swedish Bakery, which made cherry cheese fudge paczki

West Town Bakery took the Peoples’ Choice award for their warm blueberry lemon doughssant (this was my personal favorite), while Firecakes took second for their vanilla doughnut and Scafuri took third. In the judges’ vote, Firecakes took first, Goddess & Grocer took second with their red velvet doughnut filled with lemon cream cheese and topped with buttermilk icing and white chocolate pearls, and Stan’s Donuts & Coffee came in third for their chocolate dipped doughnut.
