Its not difficult for one to overlook Melrose as another greasy-spoon diner, but I think that's part of its appeal....But its much more than that. Melrose is an integral part of my life in Chicago. Melrose is open 24 hours a day, 365...Not even a best friend or partner is that reliable! I found a meal there that always pleases so I don't really explore the menu that often. Melrose has the best Tuna-salad sandwich I have ever had, at 30 years old I have tried a lot. It is fresh and light and doesn't not have any of the undesirable qualities one might associate with tuna-salad. I also love the homemade cabbage soup, try it. Every person I have introduced it to loves it. They have a large and varied menu and know lots of folks who love their 'Crunchy French toast". Keeping in mind it is a diner I am impressed with how fresh the food is.  I also love the bowl of jelly beans they have at the front counter, I will admit I always take a large amount when I pay. Melrose is great after a night out at the bars, a weekend brunch or just to see who's there at 3am. The staff is always friendly and welcoming and offer great conversation. Melrose is a Lakeview staple and I hope to continue to eat there for another 10 years.
