Time Out says

This West Rogers Park spot proves to be a solid smokehouse for Far North Siders to call their own. Inside the small and simple space, you’ll find an earnest pit master dishing out brisket that might not sport much smoke, but is tender enough to make any Jewish mother proud. Pulled pork is equally tender, boasting bright apple flavor, while musky herbs take pulled chicken deep into comforting Thanksgiving territory. Beans lean sweet and coleslaw is merely fine, but the platter-sized chocolate-chip cookie baked to order helps make up for previous shortcomings.

I was disastrously hungover one day so I ordered takeout from Rub's.  The brisket melt was heavenly and I think of it often.  The truffled mac'n'cheese, a dish the likes of which I NEVER order, was just what the doctor ordered to cover the fumes of the previous night's debauche.  I think I also got apple crisp or something, which was fine.  The melt came with chips that tasted very smoky.  This is apparently their "thing."  If you like the smoky taste, you'll dig them.  Personally, it wasn't my favorite.

We made a great night of our visit here. Growing up in this neighborhood, I have very few reasons to return but glad that I found Rub and it draws me back to the old hood. Side note, Indian Boundary Park is located right around the corner and is an excellent park for kids and adults of all ages - on a nice day, it would be a super nice idea to pick up your bbq and set up a picnic in the park. I just came up with that idea and hope I remember it next summer!

It gets busy so we go early. It's hard to order from here since it's all so good. I go with the hungry man's sampler plate. Judge if you will, I don't care! It's a little of everything, just what I want. I love that you can sample the sauces and decide for yourself which you prefer for your meat. The sweet and sassy (or something like that) is killer in my opinion.

For sides I've done the beans and mac and cheese. I don't remember the mac and cheese, so I guess that's saying something about that. However: the beans were really meaty and hearty. I highly recommend the beans. On my next visit, I will probably have to get the bread pudding because really what's a bbq joint without a good bread pudding.
