Like a sci-fi flick or fantasy novel, The Meatloaf Bakery requires a certain suspension of disbelief. In this alternate universe, pastry cases beckon with massive "cakes" of ground meats draped in delicately piped mashed-potato "frosting." "A Wing and a Prayer" cupcakes—juicy ground chicken oozing mild blue cheese—qualify as essential Chicago eating. But the “Burger” loaf's greasy beef patty opens the bad-meatloaf-memory floodgates of American lore, and not even dainty puff pastry can convince us that salmon should meet its end in a fishy meatloaf. These hunks of meat are far superior hot, so prepare to spend 20 minutes waiting, or let carryout make you into a believer.
