You might expect a place that has a 70% vegetarian menu and was completely nonsmoking before it had to be to serve boring dishes made with soy milk and flaxseeds. But this coffee shop/bar/restaurant/performance space will surprise you. Brunch features decadent takes on classics like ham and cheese stuffed brioche and sage fried chicken eggs benedict. The dinner hour brings Jeff Buckley tributes and enough surprisingly good cocktails to get through them.

Uncommon Ground is my go-to spot; I go here for dates, when folks are visiting from out of town, when I want to take myself out to dinner and when I want a good drink. I have been coming here for 10 years now and literally every time I have been here has been a great experience. The servers and bartenders are exceptional; I have always been impressed with their knowledge of food/drinks and recommendations. The food is local and seasonal(which is difficult given our climate and seasons) but has always impressed me. Meat-eaters and vegetarians alike, have been impressed with the menu. From start to finish, the drinks, sides, main courses and desserts are so good. I love the wine and beer selection and they have amazing cocktails too. This is casual enough that it's not intimidating but nice enough to impress. I love that they showcase different local artists and host live performers weekly. I love their indoor space as much as I love the patio in warm months. Love this place!
Uncommon Ground is a great spot for vegetarians looking for a good lunch or brunch option in Lakeview. Get the "cold and flu buster," hot chamomile tea with a splash of honey and vodka. If you get there early, you might be able to snag a seat by the fireplace, too.
Low-key, easy to pass by on the street, in somewhat of an unlikely location for a vegetarian restaurant, Uncommon Ground is one of my favorite spots to eat when I'm out on the North Side. The promise of a cozy atmosphere, fireplace and comfort food is too much to pass up!
