Five stores where you'll find winter sports gear

Burton Between the plush lounge, the graphic snowboards and the townhouse-meets-ski-lodge aesthetic of this Gold Coast flagship, you’ll feel cool (not chilly) just walking around this shop. The Vermont-based brand is known for its boarding gear and apparel (among which you’ll find plenty of options, from gingham jackets to colorful boards), but don’t overlook additional cold-weather goodies, such as hoodies and camo vests. 56 E Walton St (312-202-7900). El: Red to Chicago. Bus: 66, 22, 29, 36, 145, 146, 147, 151. Mon–Sat 11am–8pm; Sun 11am–6pm.

Columbia Sportswear This performance-wear chain moved onto the Mag Mile in March 2010, and brought along every kind of parka, winter hat, hiking shoe and fishing vest you’d ever need. Find women's and girls wear on the first floor, while the upper level is dedicated to men’s and boys merch. You’ll also find footwear, bags and other accessories, including water bottles, throughout the store. 830 N Michigan Ave (312-951-2679). El: Red to Chicago. Bus: 3, 66, 145, 146, 147, 151. Mon–Sat 10am–8pm; Sun 11am–7pm.

Moosejaw In addition to its own line of clothing and gear, the Lincoln Park outpost of this chain also carries items by stalwart winter brands such as The North Face, Roxy, Patagonia and more. You’ll usually find a decent sale section; look for discounts on ski and snowboard gear at the moment. Thanks to the validated parking lot in front, this location is car-friendly, but the lack of nearby CTA lines otherwise makes it a pain to trek to. 1445 W Webster Ave (773-529-1111). Bus: 9, 74. Mon–Sat 10am–9pm; Sun 11am–6pm.

REI This one-stop activewear shop is more like a warehouse than a storefront. Cover your bases, not to mention your kids’, with two floors packed to the gills with everything from skiing equipment (cross-country, downhill, you name it) and apparel to tents and hard-to-find accessories such as fancy helmet cameras. 1466 N Halsted St (312-951-6020). El: Red to North/Clybourn. Bus: 8, 72. Mon–Fri 10am–9pm; Sat 9am–9pm; Sun 11am–7pm.

Uncle Dan’s What this Lakeview boutique lacks in square footage compared to the megastores in the same ’hood is more than made up for with quality merch and an eclectic selection. Smart goods like Bogs, ear warmers with built-in headphones and Patagonia puffy scarves will cover your snowshoeing, camping and skiing needs, or just your average day trekking through the city. 3551 N Southport Ave (773-348-5800). El: Brown to Southport. Bus: 22, 77, 152. Mon–Fri 10am–8pm; Sat 10am–7pm; Sun 11am–6pm.
