You know the routine: You go out for New Year’s Eve, and then you wake up on January 1 with a hangover (right?) and the idea that this is the year you’re going to get in shape. Lucky for you, Chicago offers a wide variety of gyms for every budget. Want to transform your bod at a new spot? Solve your resolutions at one of these new gym openings in Chicago. This is going to be your year.

Resolution Eat better

This 1,500-square-foot gym is all about the “primal lifestyle.” Translation: In addition to classes focusing on body conditioning, strength training and body weight movements (using kettle bells, jump ropes and more), members also have the option of purchasing a weekly package of paleo dinners for an additional $86. Monthly memberships start at $130, and new members can sign up for a free trial that includes a week of group classes.

Resolution Get buff without lifting a single weight

If you've been to a Pink concert, you've seen her flying over the arena in silk hammocks while she sings. You can learn those moves (singing optional) at this fitness center, which teaches suspension training classes that fuse ballet barre work, yoga and Pilates with aerial silk hammocks. The pros at Air encourage you to take a 50-minute Foundation class before jumping right in. Class reservations are required and you should wear yoga-like attire for the workout.

Resolution Mastering more than just the downward dog pose

Even though this Bucktown yoga studio’s home was a Jiffy Lube in its former life, you won’t find any car parts in this garage. Instead, it’s all yoga mats and downward dog poses. Current offerings on Zen Yoga Garage’s class schedule include a yoga with weights class and barre sessions. But there's more than stretching. The “Buddha bootcamp” is a circuit-style workout that’s heavy on cardio and weightlifting. The owners also plan to offer massages in the garage’s two treatment rooms.

Gym Reach: Beyond Fitness
Tired of CrossFit? Give Spartan Group X a try at this West Town fitness facility. The workout is inspired by the Spartan Race, where participants run through an obstacle course that features fire, barbed wire and other dangerous obstructions. The studio, which opened in the summer of 2013, also features boxing classes, bootcamp sessions and Piloxing, which infuses Pilates with boxing moves. Coming soon: CrossFight, a class that combines cross training, endurance training and mixed martial arts.

Resolution Become more fit as a family

This 3,000-square-foot gym in the West Loop features state-of-the-art equipment, personal trainers, and 50-60-minute classes that split their focus between cardio and strength training. And new this year is its CrossTown Kids program, which provides physical activities and educational classes for children while their parents work out. Kids 3–7 get a half hour fitness class followed by a 30-minute nutrition and wellness session. Kids 8–12 can participate in a 50-minute fitness course. Drop-in rates are $20 and the class schedule is available on CrossTown’s website.
