Men's only yoga class

A GUY THING If you’re a guy and practice yoga, chances are you’re sometimes the only dude in a class full of ladies. But that’s never the case on Wednesday nights at 8pm at Tejas (1133 S Wabash Ave, 312-386-9642) when the South Loop studio offers a men’s only yoga class. “We decided to offer it because we know men who could benefit from yoga immensely but don’t go because they feel like they are too stiff or not good enough,” says Jim Bennitt, co-owner of the space and instructor of the class. It’s true: During certain poses, women are more flexible than men, and it can be intimidating to struggle while the gal next to you is bendier than Gumby. This class not only evens the playing field, but it also focuses on areas where guys need extra attention, such as their tight hips and shoulders. During a recent 90-minute class (which had about a dozen men), Bennitt began by focusing on breath work and meditation (“It’s the main thing that sets us apart from other studios,” Bennitt says) before moving on to simple stretches. The class is just a few weeks old and is still gaining momentum, but Bennitt has big plans for it. “Eventually, I’d like it to be a little like a men’s group,” he says. “We could talk before and after class about life from a man’s point of view. [It’s] not just a typical yoga practice.” $16 drop-in fee, class packages start at $70.
