With two locations in Lakeview and Wicker Park, Reckless Records stands as Chicago’s undisputed heavyweight of independent music retail. The Wicker Park storefront serves as the flagship, boasting an expansive selection of used vinyl—including a basement treasure trove of bargains—and a dedicated space for intimate in-store performances. Beyond its curated shelves, the shop remains a community hub by purchasing LPs, CDs, DVDs, cassettes and video games from local patrons.
While widely known as a retail giant, many don't realize that in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Reckless also operated as a record label. During its tenure, the imprint championed eclectic sounds, releasing records by influential acts such as Soft Machine, Mu, The Bevis Frond and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown.
