5 cheap, posh apartments in River North

Living in River North isn't cheap—period—but these apartments are about as good as it gets in the neighborhood

If you live in River North, you’re going to pay for it. Luckily, you also get what you pay for—world-class views of (arguably) America’s best city, gyms bedecked with amenities and all sorts of snazzy digs anyone would be crazy to deny. River North doesn’t quite have the neighborhood nightlife scene as, say, Logan Square or Lincoln Park, but there’s a lot to write home about. You’re close to the newly revamped Riverwalk, loads and loads of great food and probably near your workplace if it’s in the Loop. A short walk to the Clark/Lake station means the entire city can be yours any time you please.

161 W Kinzie St: $1,600/month

These apartments are small—get used to it. We begin our tour of the neighborhood with this splendid studio near the Merchandise Mart, which offers immediate proximity to Brown and Purple lines for quick, easy trips north and south. The kitchen all but screams contemporary, the bathroom is sleek and the bedroom has a nice view of the city. Oh, there’s also a pool on the roof.

320 W Illinois St, Apt #1487: $1,377/month

While this unit isn’t as fancy as the one before, it’s what’s on the outside that counts in this case. There’s a charmingly landscaped courtyard reminiscent of a Japanese garden that provides sunny city views and trees for shade. Despite the paltry square footage, this 420-square-foot apartment compensates by maximizing storage.

10 E Ontario St, Apt #804: $1,595/month

Now we’re talking. This 680-square-foot, one-bedroom condo has floor-to-ceiling windows and a south-facing balcony that overlooks the city, meaning you’ll get sun all day long. The carpeting is new, there are three closets (one of which is a walk-in) and just downstairs is a 7-11 that’s open 24/7. There’s little use talking this apartment up anymore, places like these sell themselves.

720 N Larrabee St, Apt #1510: $2,525/month

Oh, hello, luxury. Nice to finally meet. This two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment boasts high ceilings, a load of space, great views and expertly manicured grounds to boot. The dark wood cabinets in the kitchen give a stylish nod in what is otherwise a fairly sparse space. Yes, there’s a balcony with a view, the bedroom has a view and the living room has a view and a fireplace. One of the bathrooms sports a posh walk-in shower. What more is there to say?
