Our new monthly photo series, Capturing Chicago, compiled by Photo Editor Martha Williams, highlights the work of local photographers who capture the beauty of Chicago and its surrounding areas in compelling and striking ways. For our first installment, Williams chose a project by a Time Out contributing photographer. In Williams's words:
Chicago photographer Brendan Lekan has been documenting county fairs for several years. For this project, shot at county fairs in Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana from 2011–2013, he set out to capture fair food in all its fried glory. He found plenty of that, but he also found "the humblenss of the Midwest," Lekan says. Find more of Lekan's work on his website.
Do these photos inspire you to eat funnel cake at a nearby fair? You're in luck: The Kane County Fair in St. Charles continues through this weekend, the DuPage County Fair in Wheaton starts July 23 and the Lake County Fair in Grayslake starts August 1.
