Instead of tossing your jack-o'-lantern in the trash this year, bring it to the Plant in Back of the Yards for a pumpkin smash! Partnering with the University of Illinois Extension, the event will collect jack-o'-lanterns, pumpkins and gourds for composting, reusing the natural material instead of sending it to a landfill. Just make sure to remove any candles or decorative objects from your seasonal gourds before you smash 'em.
Donations will be accepted at "the Firehouse" at 4459 S Marshfield Ave.
