Cult movie-maker David Lynch drools over their every move, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo director tried to poach them for his film, and they’ve performed with Aphex Twin: rap-rave duo Die Antwoord would be forgiven for proclaiming their fan base the coolest around. They probably wouldn’t, though, because the South African pair – who have publicly fallen out with mainstream princess Lady Gaga – are far too edgy for that. Made up of Yolandi, a spectrally pale, black-eyed blonde, and Ninja, her towering, tattooed bandmate, Die Antwoord look as striking as they sound. Their aggressively filthy lyrics are a mix of English and Afrikaans, and its all part of the “zef” culture that they hold at the heart of their music – which basically means they take forgotten pop trends and recraft them. Witness this eccentric brilliance in action, and see why the two musicians from a tiny Cape Town village are holding the world in slightly bewildered raptures.
