The port city of Rijeka, the third biggest in Croatia by population, is beautiful and historic in its own right. It plays host to one of the world’s biggest carnivals, and in tourist season, acts as a gateway to several beautiful island getaways. Here are five of the best day trips to take from Rijeka, including national parks and ski resorts.

Krk

You might have actually already been here if your flight took you to Rijeka airport, as it is technically located on Krk and connected to the city by bridge. Krk is a popular tourist location and, as such, very busy in summer. Tied with Cres as the largest island in the Adriatic, Krk features layered architecture that reflects its long history, influenced by Roman, Venetian, Austrian and very brief Italian rule, before finally falling into Croatian hands. It’s also beautiful, visitors spoiled for choice where beaches, walks and exploring are concerned.

Opatija

Opatija

The real jewel on this getaway list, Opatija features stunning vistas and beautiful promenades, giving many reason enough to visit. Habsburg royalty would have agreed, as this health resort was popular with the Viennese elite. Those in search of rest and recuperation will love the rich spa offerings, while restaurant lovers will discover one of Croatia’s main gastronomic hubs, with four establishments currently recommended in the Michelin Guide. A delicious meal in elegant surroundings can be walked off along the Lungomare promenade, a stunning trek along Opatija’s enchanting coastline. And this is all just 30 minutes from Rijeka by car or regular local bus – though bring an extra few euros with you just in case.

Platak ski resort

A ski resort with a sea view is a rarity. This one is located just north of Rijeka in Gorski kotar, a year-round attraction 30 minutes from Rijeka, the most heavily forested region in the country. Here, you can ski or or simply enjoy the beautiful mountainous view, backdropped by the Adriatic, and be back in Rijeka for dinner. With a new cable car service having opened this week, skiers have even more reason to come and take in the landscape.

Risnjak national park

Just north of the Platak ski resort is one of Croatia’s most alluring national parks. A 50-minute drive from Rijeka, the tranquillity of Risnjak is delightful for seasoned hikers and first-timers alike. A casual stroll or a serious trek are equally rewarding, and visitors might even spot the elusive lynx (ris in Croatian), native to the region and the inspiration for the park’s name. Established as a protected area in 1953, Risnjak is one of the less-frequented reserves in Croatia, providing an excellent opportunity to escape the tourist rush in high season.

Učka national park

Forty minutes from Rijeka by car, Nature Park Učka is one of the most northerly points on the Mediterranean seaboard and connects Istria with the rest of Croatia. Its mountainous peak beckons nature-lovers of all descriptions – hiker, hang-gliding enthusiast and free climber alike – to enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the Adriatic and the surrounding region of Istria. Within strolling distance of Opatija, this natural reserve combines as the perfect weekend getaway.
