Croatia has become one of the top tourist destinations in Europe over recent years. But, it seems that the country is not only popular with visitors – Croatians themselves have said that they overwhelmingly prefer to holiday within their own country than to travel anywhere else.

According to the results of the MasterIndex survey, conducted in Croatia during May by GfK for Mastercard, nearly two-thirds of respondents (62%) spend their holidays in Croatia. That's not to say that they stay at their homes!

84% of those in the country responding who earn more than 12,000 kunas per month were planning to take a summer vacation on the Adriatic coast. Only 22% of respondents do not plan to vacation on the Croatian coast.

During their stay on Croatia's coast, 46% of respondents were planning to stay in private accommodation and 41% in their own or family-owned lodgings. 12% were planning to stay in hotel accommodation, but only 6% were planning to stay on campsites.
