The record-breaking snowdrift stopped traffic, closed schools and even prevented coffee from being served on the Riva

With snow sweeping across the region, locals in Split are remembering the great freeze of 11 years ago when life in the Dalmatian city ground to a halt. On that particular Friday, nine centimetres of snow grew to a record-setting 25cm in one day, surpassing the previous 21cm of January 1979.
Stopping traffic and closing schools, the 2012 white-out saw sledging down Marjan Hill and cross-country skiing across the city beach of Bačvice. The drift then stayed put for several days, even closing cafés along the seafront Riva, the lifeblood of the city.
