The Slavonian city of Vinkovci, a railway hub famously mentioned in Agatha Christie’s train-based thriller Murder on the Orient Express, has pioneering plans for its own public transport system.

The city is looking to be at the forefront of Croatia’s use of hydrogen generated from unrecycled waste, an EU initiative being introduced across the region by Brussels. The green light has been given to the North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley, involving three interlinked countries, running from north-eastern Italy, through Slovenia to Croatia.

Over the next six years, Vinkovci will be one of 17 pilot projects funded by some €25 million in grants. The city aims to use hydrogen energy for heating and public transport. Currently, hydrogen accounts for only two per cent of all energy consumption across the EU.
