Celebrations are in order as Zagreb's main venue for prestigious concerts, the Lisinski Hall, prepares to mark its 50th anniversary with a grand three-day programme from December 28 to 30. Established in 1973, the venue has stood witness to a rich tapestry of cultural events, ranging from orchestral and operatic concerts to stand-up comedy. Notably, it was also the stage for the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest, hosted by what was – at the time – Yugoslavia.

Named after the influential Croatian composer Vatroslav Lisinski, who made significant contributions to the arts in the region during his short life from 1819 to 1854, the venue continues to be a beacon of cultural significance. The composer’s impact, though he died just shy of age 35, extends beyond the venue, with the Porin award – Croatia's equivalent of the Grammy – named after one of his grand operas.

As part of the celebratory programme, attendees can indulge in a diverse range of activities, including guided tours of typically off-limits areas within the venue, orchestral and operatic performances, and a special children's show. This milestone anniversary serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the arena and its integral role in shaping the vibrant cultural landscape of modern Croatia.
