Spiza is a Dalmatian dialect word meaning ‘food’ in the sense of ‘grub’ or ‘nosh’ – an ironic exercise in understatement given the excellent fare on offer in this informal but excellent snack bar cum bistro. A small box-shaped room with a counter and a kitchen squeezed into one side, a few stools propped against a ledge at the other, Spiza offers fast-ish food, traditional Splitstyle. You can order grilled anchovies, ask what’s stewing in one of the pots, or wait while they cook you up a risotto to order – the menu will be chalked up on the wall. A lot of locals pop in for a beer or glass of wine, and there’s frequently a lively drinking session taking place on and around the bench in the alley outside.
