Run by the Barišić family, this konoba in Zorače, 6km (3.5 miles) from Hvar town, is set in a small, quiet bay, a great place to escape the hectic high season. Food is typical, local and good. Fresh fish and meat are grilled over an open fire or slow-cooked in the traditional way under the bell. Order in advance when you reserve the best outside table set on top of the cliff for a sunset beverage before dinner. Zorače feels like going round a friend’s house for dinner – relaxed and friendly, no bad thing when Hvar is so rapidly going upmarket. Getting there can be an adventure: Zorače is at the bottom of a steep narrow road, and parking is tight in high season.
