Is there anything more tired than the jokes about Glasgow and fried food? Deep-fried Mars Bars! Hilarious, Jim – truly succulent patter. For those with a working knowledge of the city, it’s commonly understood that we’re living in a cruelty-free paradise. So here’s our hit list of the very best vegan restaurants in Glasgow. Destroying all those couscous salad and stuffed aubergine clichés, many of these meatless menus go full junk food with fry-ups, kebabs and burgers – vegans can have fun, you know. When you’re done at one of these, why not hit up one of the best pubs or bars in Glasgow? Ask politely and they’ll tell you what’s vegan-friendly there too.

No self-respecting guide to the city’s vegan havens can pass without mentioning Mono, or its nearby sister venues Stereo, The 78 and The Flying Duck. It’s not just about the food here: sure, the fennel sausage pizza and the cubano sandwich (jackfruit brisket and roast pork-style seitan) are gorgeous, but there’s also their well-stocked bar and independent record shop, Monorail, to consider. It’s inevitably heaving at weekends, so get down early for a guaranteed table and a wait time bordering on tolerable.

Eat this: The Black Pudding Pizza is a particular standout, as is the failsafe Seitan Burger.

The Kelvinhaugh outpost of the Stereo/Mono/Flying Duck vegan empire, loved for its revolving cast of speciality falafels, is tucked just off the main drag. There’s a cracking beer list – Williams Brothers, Sam Smiths and Black Isle are the staples – and an eye-rubbingly cheap menu that includes such enduring bangers as The 78 Burger (with homemade chutney and salad), plus a weekday burger and pint deal that’ll only set you back £6.25. Perfect for a quick bite, or as a launching pad for a night on the town.

Eat this: The fully stacked Wet Burrito is a decent place to start.

Yes, the name takes its cue from the ‘Seinfeld’ episode. Why, we’re not entirely sure, although we can vouch for this West End spot (which opened in 2017) as one of the best newcomers on the vegan scene. The café garnered some notoriety at the end of last year with the world’s first ‘vegan sandwich made with Irn Bru’ (why it hadn’t been invented earlier is anyone’s guess) – a barbecue sauce made from mushrooms and jackfruit, roasted in our nation’s fizzy beverage of choice. It may not be on the menu any more, but you can still expect plenty of American-style chunky sandwiches and inventive meat substitutes. Also, dogs aren’t just permitted, but positively encouraged.

Eat this: The Pancake Slam is the perfect weekend pick-me-up, served with a sweet potato hash, streaky seitan bacon and tofu scramble.

The Enoch Square-based Glasvegan opened to considerable fanfare in 2018 with its promise of cruelty-free comfort grub – a promise it has lived up to with aplomb. Knowledgeable staff will be on hand to guide you through the contents of the Chilli and Cheez Not-Dog, the Doner Vebab and the Raw Bounty Cheesecake.

Eat this: The salty, rich Sweet Home Avocado Burger pairs avocado with ‘bacon’ pieces, vegan cheese and caramelised onion.

A quick bop south of Merchant City past the Trongate will banish any notions of unending bougieness. By day, The 13th Note is a scruffy-chic pub and low-frills veggie/vegan lunch spot. By night, it’s a raucous venue housing all manner of gigs and events. Come for the reasonably priced pints (Williams Brothers and others for under a fiver) and stay to soak them up with the spicy veg burger and Mezethes Board (a selection of falafel, houmous, flatbread and couscous).

Eat this: Got to be ‘the reuben’s’: a hot sandwich crammed with sweet potato, chickpea and mushroom pâté topped with cashew and vodka gherkin dressing.

Feeling the pull of veganism, but just can’t live without a proper fry-up? What you need is a vegan square sausage from this Merchant City spot (which does also serve meat). Game-changer. And we’re not sure how many other places in the country offer vegan french toast, though we’ll stick out on a limb and proffer ‘few even halfway as good as this’. Plenty of cakes, pies and other A* stodge to go around, too. There’s also a Bearsden location, if you ever find yourself poised in the North-West.

Eat this: It’s really got to be the vegan breakfast, hasn’t it? And not just for the sausage alone – the potato scone is an accompanying dream.

Got time for a top-notch tipple?

The 16 best bars in Glasgow

You’re in one of Europe's drinking capitals, which is why the best bars in Glasgow are actually some of the continent’s best. You must beware, though: Scots are champion drinkers (their spirit of choice? Whisky, of course) so don’t dare challenge them at their own game...
