Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg.

Johannesburg is a city of hidden gems, and few people know how to uncover them quite like Philicity Reeken. The breakfast radio host and city insider takes us beyond the usual hotspots, sharing her favourite cafés, secret markets, rooftop views, and off-the-beaten-track art deco adventures that make Joburg feel like home.

Living in Joburg has shaped the way she approaches her work on air: the city’s fast pace, constant movement, and warm, friendly energy inspire her to connect with people, strive for better, and celebrate the everyday moments that make life vibrant. And while Joburgers are lucky to have it, Philicity reminds us not to take for granted the city’s easy access to treasures like the Joburg fruit and vegetable market and the flower market, a slice of local life that’s as colourful as it is essential.

Philicity’s favourite Johannesburg gems

Maropeng

I think the one place that everyone should experience once is Maropeng. This is the official visitor centre for the Cradle of Humankind, which is just outside Johannesburg. Famous for its fascinating fossil discoveries and interactive exhibits, it’s a must-visit for anyone curious about human history. It has life-size reconstructions and underground fossil caves, and it's a great place to learn how our ancestors lived in this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Doppio Zero Greenside

One of my favourite cafés or brunch spots is Doppio Zero in Greenside. It feels like a home away from home with its relaxed vibes, strong coffee, and all-day breakfast. It's great for catching up with friends or just soaking in the neighbourhood energy.

Melville

When I want to soak up some culture or art, I head to Melville. It's one of Joburg’s most eclectic and bohemian neighbourhoods, packed with street art, quirky cafés, and independent boutiques. Melville captures the city’s creative energy like no other. It’s the perfect spot to soak up culture and discover the unexpected.

The Blueberry Hotel

The Blueberry Hill Hotel has some gorgeous rooftop views, so that's where I go when I want to feel on top of the world. It's a great place to sip a cocktail, take in sweeping city views, and watch the sunset paint the skyline, all while enjoying a chilled, elevated vibe that makes it perfect for sundowners or a relaxed evening with friends.

Fordsburg Night Market

The Fordsburg Night Market is one of my favourites in the city, especially for perfumes and spices. It's sizzling street food, colourful stalls, and the buzz of energy feel uniquely Joburg. The night market is a sensory overload and the perfect way to experience the city’s vibrant mix of cultures.

Magaliesberg Mountains

When I need a breath of fresh air, I take a road trip. I drive out to the Magaliesberg mountains area. I love the rolling green hills, hiking trails, waterfalls and cosy lodges, perfect for a quick getaway to recharge. The area also offers fun activities like zip-lining and hot-air ballooning.

Orexi

Orexi in Fourways is one of my favourite restaurants. It's a spot that surprises people. It's like a little taverna right in the heart of Joburg. The serve generous yiros, mezze spreads and perfectly grilled souvlaki. This spot is all about big flavours and laid-back charm.

Art Deco Buildings in Springs

My perfect day out would include a visit to Springs, which is in the east, to check out the art deco buildings. Springs is home to the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world outside of Miami. Wandering its streets feels like stepping back into the 1930s. It’s an architectural treasure trove that often surprises visitors.
