The Tower of Belém was put up to guard the river entrance into Lisbon harbour. Built on the orders of Dom Manuel the Fortunate, it has stonework motifs recalling the Discoveries, among them twisted rope and the Catholic Crosses of Christ, as well as Lisbon's patron saint St Vincent and a rhinoceros.

The tower is a gorgeous site in the evening! The lights are beautiful, and you can see the famous statue from across the water. During the day, this is right next to many of the best museums in the city, making it a lovely destination for a few hours of touring.

The Torre de Belém is a cute tower, located not too far from the Jerónimos Monastery. It was within walking distance and made for a nice break after visiting the monastery. The view at the top was nice because we could see into the ocean from one side and at the city of Lisbon on the other side. It's not very high so you can't see too much but it does make for a relaxing and windy experience!

I liked that there were areas to sit at the bottom of the Tower, as the view of the water was quite peaceful. My friends and I had a good rest around the Tower after sightseeing all day, so I'd recommend it as the last destination when in this part of the city. There were several carts selling ice cream and even wine around this area, so you could have a lovely break too.

As nice of an experience as this was, it wasn't spectacular as a tourist attraction compared to the other sites in Lisbon. So if you're short on time, I'd say this would be alright to miss.

We cycled out to Torre de Belém from central Lisbon one afternoon, and are truly glad we did! The tower is an amazing structure, in gorgeous surroundings.
