In this case, putting your foot in Poça is not only recommended – it is a guaranteed success. Get off at Estoril station and walk from there, about five minutes along the seafront promenade, heading towards Lisbon. A set of stairs and a ramp will point you down to the stretch of sand usually claimed by families and surfers.
HOW TO GET THERE: On the Marginal, driving from Cascais towards Lisbon, turn into the car park on the right after passing Estoril. At weekends, you are better off typing “Vale de Santa Rita” into the GPS: there is a tunnel connecting it to the beach.
