The culturally vital Centro Cultural de Belém opened in 1993. Its Centro de Exposições is the best art space in town, dominated since 2007 by the Museu Colecção Berardo. This showcase for the collection of Madeiran-born mining-to-media magnate José 'Joe' Berardo runs to hundreds of pieces, from Picasso and Duchamp to Warhol, Bacon and local girl Paula Rego. In fact, there's only room for some 900 of Berardo's more than 4,000 works (by some 550 different artists), representing dozens of modern movements.
