Originally commissioned by painter José Malhoa, who had his atelier upstairs, this house was bought by art enthusiast Dr Gonçalves. He favoured landscapes and portraits by Mário Augusto, Bordalo Pinheiro and his chum Silva Porto. Gonçalves also amassed a collection of Chinese porcelain from the Ming and Transition periods, as well as 18th- and 19th-century English, French and Portuguese furniture.
