José Avillez had already made his name with his adventurous approach to Portuguese cuisine when he took over this space opposite the opera house in 2010. Within a year, it had won a Michelin star and, for many, established itself as Lisbon's top restaurant. In 2014, it won a second star, thanks to the continuity provided by David Jesus as head chef. Avillez has four more informal eateries in the area but you must book a table at Belcanto to try his 'revisited' Portuguese cuisine, exemplified in dishes such as cozido à portuguesa - a traditional stew, but with each flavour clearly distinguishable. Full tasting menus start from €75; there are also lunch menus (€40-€60).
