There's the sirloin steak. Then there's the sirloin steak gravy. And sirloin steak fries, that you dip on the sirloin steak gravy... Talking about the Café de São Bento means talking about this prodigy of the city's cuisine, which every Lisboner should have at least once. Some of their other dishes, such as the steak sandwich in Alentejo bread or the rib-eye steak (whose gravy is inspired by the historic Marrare-style steak) are more affordable, but it won't be the same thing. Oh, and let's not forget the “esparregado” mashed spinach to go along with the sirloin steak.
Time Out tips:
– Go on an empty stomach and at the end try the apple tatin pie.
– The restaurant celebrates its 35th anniversary this year – what a nice age!
– The sirloin steak gravy is composed of cream, pepper, salt, butter and the meat's own juices.
