The El Pibe (which moved from Santos to the Santana hill in mid-2016) offers lunch menus so cheap that you will peruse the list searching for a catch. There isn't one. They really are inexpensive, and you won't leave hungry: the empanadas are the highlights and have truly great fillings. What are they filled with? Spinach and mozzarella, veal and pork curry, onions, chilli peppers, ginger, chives and mushrooms. Besides Latin-American tradition, the empanadas also come in Portuguese flavours.
Time Out tips:
– They also make a good steak sandwich, called a lomito.
– For dessert you can have alfajores, the famous cookies with dulce de leche.
– The restaurant isn't particularly pretty and it's always full of kids. But nothing's perfect.
