Dresden-born artist A.R. Penck ran into constant trouble with the East German authorities before fleeing to the West in 1980. His newfound joy in being free to practice as he liked saturates his paintings of the '80s. Like British fashion, everything got a whole lot bigger and a whole lot brighter. Michael Werner Gallery places several of Penck's major paintings from the time alongside 'Memorial to an Unknown East German Soldier', a bronze sculpture inspired by the artist's time as a reservist.
