To misquote Forrest Gump’s mother, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is like a box of chocolates. Or rather, it’s like a vast, family-sized festive crate of chocolates, all wrapped in the shiniest packaging, all exploding with sweetness and surprises. May...

Overblown in almost every respect (not only its giant ape), 'Kong: Skull Island' is the kind of Hollywood fever dream that, in its first few minutes alone, throws at you a WWII bomber crash, a sizzling montage of Cold War nuclear escalation and a ...

“It’s morphin’ time!” fans will yell, as waves of light explode, color-coded armor creeps onto bodies, and tears of recognition are wiped away. Rarely has a franchise dominated childhoods as thoroughly as the ’90s-era live-action 'Mighty Morphin P...

M Night Shyamalan still takes himself deadly seriously, as if none of the flops after ‘The Sixth Sense’ ever happened. His latest thriller is ‘Split’, one of those sombre, cello-scored dramas about a clever psychopath. James McAvoy (having too muc...

Before you get funny, no, they haven’t come for his cat this time. Keanu Reeves is back as the taciturn ex-assassin prone to murderous rages: 2014’s ‘John Wick’ saw him taking on the Russian mobsters who killed his dog (it reminded him of his dead...

This is one of my local cinemas and I have come here a few times recently to watch the award season films purely out of convenience, not choice. It is clearly understaffed - long ticket/food queues and poorly cleaned toilets. The food and tickets are purchased from the same counter which increases wait times. Overall bad service and an average cinema experience.

Acton Vue tends to attract the sort who pay for films only to look at their phones continually, eat corpse logs in buns and dairy-slathered nachos, and generally lout about. The staff don't care. It's kind of echoey in there, like a giant hibernation cavern but for humans, hence the endless supplies of popcorn, pick 'n' mix and slushees needed to survive the Winter.

Back in 'my day', by which I mean back in 1998 when I was four years old, my parents brought me here to see my first ever film. It was the Disney animation Mulan. Cute story, actually: My father told me we were 'going to the pictures', and for the entire film I sat there impatiently waiting to go and see 'the pictures'. Not until I demanded to be taken to 'the pictures' did I learn that the film was the pictures and that my father was using an outdated Irish colloquialism. Of course, it wasn't the Vue then, and as I recall, it had more of a touch of class about it. Pianist in the lobby, plush velvet carpets, that sort of thing. All gone now; the overheads were unsustainable once pirate DVDs and Torrenting came along.

P.S: What exactly are the other reviews for this chain cinema multiplex going on about, I wonder? Who knows? Who cares? I do, a bit, actually. Am I being left out of some exclusive club, full of people in the know about 'Icons'. Who are these people? I don't know! Most of them were all written on the same day! Is this the internet equivalent of placing a coded message addressed to a Russian sleeper cell into an advert in Loot? Ahhhh!
