Located on the first floor of the Royal Festival Hall in the Southbank Centre, Skylon takes its name from one of the original structures built for the 1951 Festival of Britain, but the culinary fare is far from stuck in the past.

The seasonal menu, under direction from executive chef Kim Woodward, features contemporary dishes, such as smoked salmon cannelloni and seared foie gras served with apricot gel and a touch of cherry blossom.

There are menus for brunch, tasting and set lunch, depending on what you fancy, as well as a pre-theatre option. However, the selling point of Skylon has to be the view – looking out onto the Thames from South Bank through huge windows adds a certain panache to the whole dining experience.

The restaurant is situated in the Southbank Centre and boasts great views over the the Thames. We came here for the Sunday Brunch (2 courses and unlimited Prosecco at £35 per person (without Prosecco it's £20). The menu online is a little different from what is shown on arrival (always cheeky when restaurants do this, as what you were planning on having is never there!). Upon arrival we were informed some of the fancier items (i.e. caviar and lobster) were no longer being served so not a great start. What was a great start was the continuous topping up of Prosecco, upon arrival glass was filled and waiters were very attentive in this respect. Nevertheless with the food, there is still a good selection to opt for from the starters and mains. Opted for the Cinnamon Toast and Bubble and Squeak,the food was well presented and tasted good, nothing to special. They were not so good with others in the group who had some specific cooking requirements (e.g. cooking fried eggs a certain way). We were there for the two hours (and a bit) and then they gradually 'suggested' we move to the bar. Drinks at the bar are over priced and going up to order they still included service charge (no thanks!). The venue itself is very classic looking, white table cloths and a clean simple look, high windows give a great view. Food is simple and straightforward and Prosecco continuously flowing.

I have been dying to dine here for years. As an avid visitor to the Southbank Centre I’ve also fantasized about a pre-show meal in this gorgeous setting overlooking the Thames. So when one of my friends surprised me for a birthday dinner, it was a screeching delight. The setting is the clincher. Nestled at the forefront of the Royal Festival Hall with panoramic views of the northbank, Skylon is an exquisitely stylish setting for an evening meal. On the instagrammable scale, I’d rate it an 7/10. However, when the filters are off, there are some flow issues with the restaurant and tables are quite close together if you don’t manage to nab a window seat. The food is stunning. We ordered from a set menu of either 2 or 3 courses and went the full hog with 3. Their pork belly is delicious and weirdly not too fatty which is great. But nothing beat the Black Forest gateux dessert that just had me yearning for more. Service is patchy. For an evening that had both great weather and several shows happening on the Southbank Centre it felt very under staffed and it took us ages to pay our bill that we ended up just getting up and walking straight over to a till. Nonetheless, for great food and views that make an impression, I couldn’t recommend it enough.

On Saturday we visited Skylon to try their bottomless bunch deal - £35 for 2 course plus an extra £5 for dessert. There was approximately 10 starters and 10 desserts to choose from all which looked amazing, with the vast majority served with eggs. I choose to have the cinnamon french toast, maple syrup and crispy bacon for starter which I couldn’t fault, it was perfectly cooked. For main i had the ox cheek and sweet potato hash with a side of carrots, unfortunately the hash wasn’t as impressive as expected and definitely needed to come with a side of extra potatoe, and the carrots although covered in butter were fairly tasteless. Others had the grilled salmon and steak which they said was greatWe all had desserts varying from sorbet, creme brûlée and cheese. I don’t think next time i’d bother having dessert, the creme brûlée custard was very running, the sorbet came out very melted and the cheese board was one small slab of cheese with 6 crackers, usually i’d expect a wider variety. All in all the value, atmosphere and service were all very good, our glasses were constantly topped up and the staff were very friendly, although requesting the table back as we ordered additional cocktails was quite rude especially as the restaurant was very empty by this point. If you’re looking for a brunch with a view this is a great venue.

Underwhelmed. On arrival at the restaurant you're met with a rather chaotic scene as too few staff try to find tables for people while the waiting area is too small.  We arrived exactly on time for our table and ended up waiting 15 minutes before we were seated after having caught the eye of the restaurant manager and made it obvious we were displeased.  For the rest of the evening our service was excellent however I don't know whether this is standard or as a result of the manager having word...

We ate from the Evening Standard menu (which turned out to be quite different from what we had looked at online).  The food was good but to be honest given the prestige of the place I was expecting better and somehow the portions almost seemed to big (I mean, if I'm already sold on getting three courses for £25 obviously I'm going to need room for dessert).  To be fair, the desserts were pretty outstanding, we ordered the sticky toffee pudding and the hazlenut creme brule which we halved between us.  Definitely the highlight of the meal.  I wouldn't rush back.

Skylon’s an odd sort of place. Designed for culinarily cautious out-of-towners who want to eat steak and drink cocktails whilst overlooking the Thames, it was also surprisingly full of locals seduced by the twinkly lit & ultra sparkly Golden Jubilee Bridge outside and laying down – on average – close to a tenner for a glass of wine. This is not a place to go when you’re feeling frugal – book a deal as I did and chances are you’ll spend the same again on a couple of glasses of grape juice. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing per se, just something to be aware of when booking. That view? Those lights? You’ll pay for them.

As part of the D&D Restaurant Group, Skylon is currently participating in their ream of January set menu deals; 2/3 courses with a glass of wine for £20/25 which, given the location and the setting, sounds like pretty good value. Red wine poached pear with crumbs of blue cheese & walnuts was lovely and fresh although came with an overly generous portion of bitter salad leaves which added a nice texture but overwhelmed the poor fruit in terms of flavour. I realise that set menus are a bit like work Christmas dinners once December 1st rolls around – the words ‘conveyor belt’ spring to mind – but it would be nice to at least be given a few seconds of breathing space between courses and not have your plate whisked away while you’re still chewing the last mouthful from it. Sirloin minute steak was beautifully flavoured and well-cooked but quite fatty; you could question that you get what you pay for in terms of cuts of meat but if you’ve been to Flat Iron – and if you haven’t, you oh so very should – you’ll know that it’s entirely possible to have a fantastic steak without paying the earth.

I’d say Skylon more than ticks the box if you want to take someone for a pre-dinner drink and a special view of the river and all the glorious buildings that stand to attention on either side – the bar is beautiful, flatteringly low lit and in possession of an extensive drinks menu but my advice would be to splash out on something in a fancy glass here…then nip out the side door and over to the newly opened Honest Burger for dinner.

For a great view, this is the place for you. Skylon is beautiful! However the food, service and wine options, aren't great. We were sat in a noisy spot, right near the register. The restaurant itself is HUGE so everything echoes. While the food is great, the prices don't match the quality - it's slightly overpriced. You're basically paying for the view and location.

For drinks, this is a fabulous location overlooking the river, perfect to show off to out-of-town visitors or go on a smart date. Drinks-only tables are placed right by the window, so you can get the experience and views without having a meal.


However, for food, it's VERY overpriced for the quantity and quality of food, and the service leaves a lot to be desired. A booked table still led to a 15min wait, the staff are almost surly, and we were rushed out despite having just spent just over £300. 


I'd return for the bar, but not the restaurant!

A beautiful place for a date, this place is located within the royal festival hall. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the best seats are the one near the window overlooking the river. We came here for the taste of the wild tasting menu priced at 75pp. The foie gras, scallops were absolutely stunning. Main course is the red deer which was nicely cooked. Desserts were a sweet surprise with great effort made into the presentation. The dinner didn’t wowed me away given it’s pretty pricey but it’s a nice place for a special occasion.

Me and my friends went as part of the 60 Days of Summer promotion.  We were treated to three courses and a glass wine for £25.  At that bargain price and seeing such beautiful pictures of the food on Instagram we decided to try it out ourselves.


The restaurant is bright and airy with large windows looking out towards the Southbank and onto the Thames.  The blinds were slightly lowered on arrival to protect us from the glare of the setting sun.  When the sun lowered the blinds were opened and we got a full floor to ceiling view of London.


The service was fantastic and attentive, they brought us tap water and bread, topping it up when it became empty.  I chose the seared tuna to start, the lamb for mains and a macaron to finish.  All the dishes were beautifully plated, definitely worthy of Instagram.  The lamb came with some veg, but some of the other mains didn't have as many accompaniments.


It was definitely worth the money and I'd go back again for another equivalent deal.

South banks boozy brunch just got electric with the new chef Kim woodward, charming staff and fantastic food. Skylon offers a diverse menu which leaves you spoilt for choice, the brioche French toast and maple syrup with bacon was decadent, followed by a roast beef sirloin that was perfectly cooked with a yummy Yorkshire pudding and tantalising gravy. The unlimited prosecco flowed throughout the 2hrs and the bloody Mary's were some of the best we have had. Definitely worth trying.

I'd always fancied going here as a few friends had said the food there was amazing. On this point I most definitely agree. We experienced a 4 course meal option and every course was mouth-wateringly perfect. It's one of those food experiences where you think 'yeah I don't mind that I paid that little bit extra for this meal'

It's also worth mentioning that the staff also were friendly and very attentive. They really kept an eye on each table so that if your glass was nearing empty they'd be there to top it up. Yet they managed to do this whilst being in way intrusive. Lovely.

The only thing I wasn't that keen on was the actual restaurant space and decor itself. I love the Royal Festival Hall and it's quirky 50s or is 60s style but if I'm selecting a restaurant for that very special occasion I don't know that this high roofed soda style at Skylon would make me feel that we were at a high end establishment. Don't get me wrong the food and impeccable service assures you that you are eating out at a doe half venue but the decor slightly ruined that high class experience for me. Essentially it's no competition for the Ritz or the Waldorf in terms of decor and ambience. The high ceilings and large open restaurant space also lead to a quite noisy eating area. I think acoustically it enhances the low levels of usual restaurant noises to result in a quite noisy venue. That also didn't feel in keeping with a venue that is very obviously working hard to be a high end restaurant.

One other issue is that the restaurant is significantly about the view so if you don't land a window table then your experience is automatically lessened quite dramatically. I should say that I still enjoyed eating out at this restaurant despite not landing a window seat but it was still a bit of a let down based on the fee I was dishing out for the experience.

Overall this is definitely a place I'd recommend for a special occasion meal but I don't think it's that's suited to a romantic night out. Maybe more a family occasion for a birthday or the like. Lovely food, lovely staff. It's just slightly lacking in high class decor and ambiance for me.

Skylon is in a wonderful space in the Southbank centre with huge windows providing awesome views along the river. It gives the impression of being a high end restaurant, and the prices certainly reflect this but somewhere along the line it doesn't quite live up to its own expectations.

Service is a bit hit and miss; the food felt like standard pub grub but dressed up to try and justify the prices. My friend noted that none of the mains really come with veg so if you want a balanced meal you're probably going to have to include a side.

I really enjoyed being in such a beautiful setting and this place is a welcome relief from the chains that dominate the riverside. The cocktails are a big highlight, although again steeper than most cocktail prices in London, and they're all pretty steep.

Having such high prices definitely gives this venue an air of exclusivity in such a central spot. It was busy without being full or noisy. We went for lunch and managed to stay most of the afternoon, which was a massive plus in this location on a Sunday. Most places would have found a way to turn over our table.

While I don't mind occasionally paying over the odds for a treat I think they could work harder to make the food and service match up to the atmosphere here. You're basically paying for the view.


I found Skylon really quite disappointing. Though the atmosphere, presentation of the food, and prices, would lead you to believe that this is a top restaurant, I found the food didn't match the expectations. Picture perfect on the plate, everything was just a little... tasteless! When forking out for a meal, you hope for fresh fresh ingredients - and sadly Skylon didn't really deliver. That being said, it really is a very lovely view!

I was recently having trouble trying to think of somewhere on the Southbank, that wasn’t a chain, to eat at before a show at the Royal Festival Hall. I wouldn’t normally pick somewhere as fancy as Skylon to eat at, but they are currently offering a £30 three course and glass of Chandon Evening Standard menu. Skylon couldn’t be more convenient, being located in the Royal Festival Hall, and the view of the river Thames is lovely. The service was attentive and very friendly and the servers were good at making sure we would be out in time for our show at 7:30. Each course that I had was delicious - a blood orange salad, mushroom wellington and rhubarb cheesecake. The regular menu may be more expensive than I would like, but even without the £30 menu special, it would be a great place for a pre or post show drink.

I visited recently and took advantage of the Evening Standard deal, three courses and a glass of bubbles for £30. We did of course end up spending another £30 each on cocktails and service, but it was still a good deal. The food was good, but if I'm honest, didn't blow me away, presentation is beautiful, but sadly it was a little bland and not as flavoursome as I would expect from this calibre of restaurant. However, the dessert was amazing and the setting, atmosphere and service really were top notch. The waiters were incredibly attentive and made the evening really enjoyable. I would visit again, but would perhaps try the grill or the a la carte menu next time. It's definitely a good spot for a cocktail, particularly if you want to impress a date.

During January and August The D&D London restaurant group tend to run special offer menus, as it's generally a quieter period in the restaurant trade. It's well worth taking full advantage of these offers as they are great value and a lovely chance to experience some 'fancy pants' dining experiences without over-stretching the purse strings.


We enjoyed Skylon's Evening Standard special deal on a bright January day and got a fabulous view over The Thames on Southbank. Although I'd done a run that morning especially so I could enjoy a fine dessert, we were both too full to do so. But we enjoyed a lovely starters and mains with deliciously fresh bread, a sweet Bellini each and coffees to finish, all for under £25 pp including services.


Overall a great place to have a leisurely lunch or dinner and enjoy some quality food, excellent service and a feeling of luxury, away from the hustle of the riverside below. Particularly good value during offer season or choosing a set menu.


Had a lovely evening here on a rainy summer's evening. Booked it via the Evening Standard's #60daysofsummer offer which comprised of 2 courses and a glass of wine for £20. It was well worth it as the venue feels luxurious, particularly of an evening due to the excellent lighting. The bar is beautiful with a 1950s look about it. Our food was delicious and the waiter couldn't have been more friendly and professional. We didn't feel rushed, despite arriving late and the restaurant being full. 


Very warm welcome, friendly staff, amazing view, lights changing with time in the evening giving a spectacular experience of 'eating and watching the sun going down on the Thames'. 1 glass wasn't 100% clean but very quickly replaced. Mise en bouche: white tomatoes with cream soup absolutely fantastic and surprising. Foie gras delicious (very salty) but oh my God amazing warm brioche served on the side. delicious fresh herbs. salmon starter ok but not amazing. mutton main with pie and mash creamy absolutely amazing and melting in the mouth. excellent presentation. beef with cabbage was amazing (simple ingredients but perfectly cooked offering a plus you cannot get at home). Halibut and mussels sauce perfectly cooked, served and presented, flavours combo ideal. Vacqueyras 2011 perfect as expected. Lovely passion fruits meringue tart and 'happy birthday' singing. All service very prompt, human and adding a sense of celebration. Very noisy buzzing atmosphere at the beginning around 8ish on friday night but cooling down afterwards and reaching perfection. Staff offered to take pictures twice which was very kind. You must try it and you will remember it. Maybe better during the week, window table highly recommended. 


This had been the worst service I have ever encountered. I had made a reservation 3 weeks in advance of the dinner and recieved an email confirming it. However when I arrived with my girlfriend the staff was really unwelcoming and looked at both of us disapprovingly. They couldn't find my reservation because I hadn't paid a deposit, however the email I received didn't mention such a thing. The lady kept insisting that they had contacted me, apparently from a private number while I was at work and left voicemail messages. Unfortunately as I was unable to access my voicemail they proceeded to cancel my reservation without informing me. When I asked why I didn't get an email they said they didn't have my email, even though I had received the first confirmation there. In the end I found myself arguing with her, not because I couldn't understand the reason why this had happened but because her tone suggested that it was my fault and that I should have answered when they called. This was entirely unnecessary and unprofessional as her attitude was both ironic and condescending. Not recommended


Skylon should be one of London's most iconic restaurants but the patchy service lets it down. I went on the 28th and had reserved a table for four. The food was good and the atmosphere buzzing but the appalling front of house was dreadful. She was rude and abrupt to us and her colleagues, assumed I had not made a reservation and had trouble understanding my name, demanding "what?" "what?" . We had requested a window table on booking months ago as it was a special occasion but this was not honoured. The other waiters were lovely and I hope the management take note as their reputation rests not only on the food but on the way staff treat their customers.


Good view, good wine. Very very slow service! Lack of attention to customers, 3 rice dishes came undercooked and even crunchie! Fish of the day was not available, another fish dish was served too salty with spinach also with too much salt.. Meat dishes were good. Sharing plates are quite small. 3 stars are an absolute max..


Wonderfully festive at this time of year, fabulous views. Amazing service and excellent food served with theatre and flourish. Stylish yet not fussy or stuffy! Interesting options on a reassuringly limited menu. A proper night out.

Quite nice food, great views, very very slow service. It took 20 min to be served and didn't get to try the desert as 1.5 hours was not enough time.


Went to Skylon for early dinner with a couple of friends. The food was good - not fantastic - but great value on the pre-theatre menu. Service was superb both in the restaurant and at the bar. HOWEVER, not everything I entrusted to the cloak room came back to me, namely a very lovely pair of black cashmere, fur trimmed gloves. I called the restaurant but noone called me back. I then called in when I was next at South Bank and was kept waiting before anyone would actually speak to me. Details were noted with the promise of a call. The call was made at exactly the time I had asked them not to call and from a clearly busy restaurant so that the person at Skylon could not hear me. Oddly the line went dead and there was no attempt to contact me again. An unbelievable attitude for what could otherwise be a great venue.


Went there on a Saturday, the place is lovely, but the dishes were not so good including my girlfriend's chicken was rare and she left half of the food on the plate. They always ask about how was the food, and if it is good... fine, but if there's something wrong... fine too. We complained to the waitress and they didn't apologize or give us a single word and right away they want to sell us some desserts. For what we payed, the portion were really tiny, and not so good. I won't be going again for sure.


Went there on Friday evening for some drinks with my friends, we were very warmly welcomed during our entry trough the main doors In the reception area and was same during our entry in the bar area, a friendly waitress met us and helped out with finding a table for us as we were 5, we got an amazing table with a view of Thames river, which i think Is one of the gratest views in London!Friendly, positive energy giving waitress which is really hard working and giving the best service we ever got in any of the other London bars, we always had full glasses of water and She kept refiling our nut ball and kept offering to have some more drinks what is of course her job,but it was really great that we didn't even have to wait for her to come and ask ! Also other waitreses fla couple of times hassed by and asked us if we werelright. Furthermore, those waitresses in Skylon are absolutely beautiful, all of them are skinny, pretty, cute,and i could not take my eyes away of our waitress with the shoulder lenght dark Hair! And what is trally strange that waitresses have really pretty uniforms, dresses and high heels, what i guess is not ab easy job fir their feets! The cocktails were really great, helpful waitress answered all our questions and had a perfect knowledge about alcohol and cocktails ! Management were walking around and supervising the area with smiles, looks like team work Is really strong in there. I think Skylon is one of the gratest place to go in London!


Had a great evening 12 months ago. And so I went again last night. Snotty-yet-absent staff, tiny tiny portions (4.50 for a espresso cup of green beans) and dull-yet-pricey wine. The venue itself is still very nice, but I won't be going again.


Great place to go overlooking the Thames. Two different restaurant, the brasserie is less formal, but the a la carte is brilliant for a special occasion.
