Enter Bäkehaus and you’re transported to Germany. But, be warned, this is not a quaint kleinstadt bakery – this is what a typical German chain bakery is like, with one wall lined with self-service baked goods. It’s all DIY here – even the coffee comes out of self-service machines.
A big part of the shop is taken up by high tables, at which customers can sit and munch their baked goods. Proper pretzels are made the German way, by boiling them first in lye (alkaline solution).
Other goods to make the German expat heart beat faster include Berliners (deep-fried doughnuts filled with jam), nut-nougat-filled croissants, and plunder pastries (‘Danish’ confections made from yeasty plunder dough).
A poppy-seed swirl was bursting with its black seed filling, mixed with hazelnuts and vanilla custard, the bun topped off with a sticky apricot glaze.
Lunchtimes get busy at Bäkehaus. Sandwiches with German fillings such as fleischkäse (slices of baked meatloaf) or schnitzel (flattened, breaded and fried veal) compete with weisswurst (Bavarian sausage).
The currywurst (sausage and curry sauce) comes from the Charing Cross wurst shop, Herman ze German.
Vegetarian options include a herby omelette sandwich, spinach strudel or a lye bagel with cheese. Dense loaves such as spelt or rye bread sit temptingly close to the exit ensuring you don’t want to leave.
It may not be the pinnacle of German craft baking, but Bäkehaus brings a slice of echt German food culture to Hammersmith.

The staff are always really friendly when I pop in for my lunchtime pizza! The food is consistently delicious and it's a lovely atmosphere.
German bakery culture mixed with traditional German warm meals make this place the prefect one-for-all stop for German expats and foodies alike
Great food, lovely staff and amazing breads. Try the 100% Spelt bloomer which is hard to find. I work in the area and now practically come here every day for my lunch. Great range of products, highly recommended!
Bakehaus is my new favourite place in Hammersmith :-) Love the ambience and quality of food provided. Their bread is simply delicious...well done Bakehaus.
What makes Bäkehaus special is the bread. If you are happy with normal squishy square white bread then you probably won't care, but if you really like bread then Bäkehaus is wonderful. And wonderful in a "we buy this for our normal daily needs" way, not "oh look it's £4 for something with a fancy French name" as in so many places. We've liked everything we've tried there and - the yoghurt bread especially is amazingly good - moist and dense with a great crust. The The yoghurt "rübli", and the various seeded and sourdough rolls are as good as you'll find in any average bakery in Germany, and that puts them about a thousand miles ahead of what you'll find in Greggs or most of the other places which pass for a "bakery" here in the UK. Honestly this place is a revelation for bread lovers! The coffee is pretty good considering it comes from a machine but I wouldn't go there just for that... the cakes ARE good though and adding the little cake section at the front was a welcome change. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.
Love the place! Just had a German Currywurst.... Delicious. It's definitely one of the best bakeries in town. I will come back soon!
It surprises me that their are some negative reviews here. I find Bakehaus to be extremely good value for money compared with its competitors and the food has always been great. The coffee is cheap and self service saves time if you are in a hurry and the bread is 2nd to none in London in my experience. I lived in Germany for a few years and everytime I step inside the door it brings be back! Wonderful
Bakehouse is my favourite place in Hammersmith. I come here every day. Don't think their coffee is poor. It's really good value for the money actually. Fresh bean to cup...Also, try their new curry wurst it's delicious. Hope they open more stores in London.
This isnt 4 star.. Coffee is poor, pastrys are ok, sleection of savoury food is average. It is quite appealing to the eye once you walk in the door at the selection of pastrys but thats about it. After reading the above review i was expecting a german version of the PAUL cafe chain. What i got was a slightly better Greggs.
