Everything from the fairy lights to the fireplace is cosily soft focus at Clos Maggiore, often billed as the most romantic restaurant in London.
Romantic settings don’t get more splendidly over-the-top than this. Take your pick from the wood-panelled restaurant or the atmospheric conservatory, bedecked in a forest of fake white blossoms that seem to extend into eternity as they bounce off the restaurant’s mirrors. Fairy lights, candles and a fireplace add to the soft focus vibe. On our early evening visit, tables were filled with mature couples and curious tourists. It’s a Provençal-inspired menu, and although à la carte choices are pegged at the sharp end, the pre-theatre menu offering is a bargain. A cavernous bowl of gazpacho topped with crunchy croûtons and diced cucumber blew our socks off (in a good way) with its unashamedly pungent garlicky kick. Satisfyingly filling, a trio of meaty bites – foie gras terrine, herby pork shoulder confit and a tasty kofta – made for a carnivore’s delight. Less memorable, chunky roasted pollock fillet was tender and juicy, but overshadowed by a rich moat of vermouth cream, buttery crushed potatoes and softened leeks (more butter) – not one for the faint-hearted. Service is polished, if a tad austere, and the wine selection seriously impressive.

Clos may be voted as London's most romantic restaurant but this comes with a price, and a very lengthy waiting list for the coveted insta-famous tables in the conservatory. I booked a table 5 months in advance and was lucky enough to be sitting under the flowers, which was very romantic and magical indeed. The set lunch menu consists of 3 courses and half a bottle of wine for £39.50, which is fine for a special occasion. Though after 5 months anticipation I was hoping the food would be as perfect as the setting, but was slightly underwhelmed. The foie gras was dry and the truffle pasta too rich and heavy to finish. I sympathise with anyone who is seated outside of the conservatory - the food and atmosphere in that majority of the restaurant is not worth the money or forward planning.
Went here from a Tokyo friends recommendation disappoint they didn't have a " all you can eat salad bar" ... spare ribs were cold!.... wasn't what I call a jolly.
The pictures they have on line are misleading. If you expect to be seated here: http://bowes-lyonpartnership.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Romantic-Restaurants-Clos-Maggiore.jpgbe more prepared to be seated here: http://thumbs.yardpartners.com/oVqv8q75WFh6w-je9i2N0QZEY_c=/420x300/omotg.com/media/upload/review/Clos_Maggiore_Inside.JPG They obviously won’t tell you in advance enough for you to be able to make alternative arrangements. I had booked this restaurant for me and my girlfriend for our first year anniversary. They called me a day before the date to tell me that there won’t be any seats in the conservatory (the first picture) and that I would essentially have to go to the main restaurant (the second less attractive picture). I had to find an alternative a day before, and this is very difficult in London. They are NOT RELIABLE! Don’t book this restaurant for any important event.
Love this restaurant.. Great ambience and amazing food. I like the review on this blog it's a good read
Horrible service!!! Been sitting in a tiny table near bar with no view at all They didnt warn you about that when you are booking a table. Was ruin my anniversary day!!! WHAT A SHAME!
Sat in the small area near the bar, avoid this restaurant not worth the hassle. Even McDonald's has better customer service
I went to Clos Maggiore for my wedding anniversary with my husband who had arranged it. We had a table in the very romantic fairy light lit conservatory at the back of the restaurant and the food and service was excellent. I had fish to start followed by the chicken which was very nicely cooked and the sauce was amazing. They even brought a plate of petit fours on a Happy Anniversary plate which was a lovely touch and I managed to eat that even after pudding too! A very enjoyable experience and I would very much like to go back soon!
Excellent place for a romantic dinner. Extraordinary vine list. Service is also great, nothing is too much to ask for - high end place. Book it in advance, not so easy to get a table, especially in the conservatory. Again, staff is superb, got back to me on a phone to let me know that there was a table for my required time!
Very good food in a great enviroment, the enviroment is very romantic and given the quality location and service it is well priced, a perfect location to treat a partner. TIP: Make sure to book in advance and specify the tables in the main room, these are filled on a first booking though may end up on one of the 2 tables by the door which are more in the hall than the main room! Also if you want the tasting menu it takes 3 hrs and we only had 2 last time so worth setting a lot of time aside for that
Wonderful restaurant. The food never disappoints and nor does service. Have eaten here several times, once was an anniversary and the polite and attentive staff went out of their way to ensure that our evening was as enjoyable as possible. Would recommend to anyone looking for excellent food and drink at reasonable prices.
Brilliant; I come here every few weeks. Ambiance is brilliant, and food usually spot on. Can't get enough of the trufflesque nibble dip that comes with the breadsticks.
Today we had one of the best lunches we've ever eaten ... Perfect fois gras, perfectly cooked cod ... A cheese board to die for. The room is delightful, the service attentive without being over-bearing and the wine list amazing ! We will certainly remember today forever.
Beware of where you get put...If you want to sit in the conservatory - "the most popular bit of the restaurant" we were told we should have asked for it! Instead we were placed in the bar area for dinner, despite booking almost a month ahead. I got the feeling that slight greed for customers - packing them in cheek by jowl with up to three sittings a night - is slowly chipping off the veneer on what used to be a truly spectacular restaurant.
Really lovely restaurant. Ask to be seated in the main room, it's very romantic at night. Side rooms and upstiars also gd, old wordly feel, wooden panels. Food is delicious and service was good. Reasonbaly priced. 6 ladies, 3 courses each with coffees, 4 bottles cost £60pp.
Went for 2 courses offer at 22:00 on a Thursday afternoon and they refused saying that it was at 22:30 even though it states otherwise on their own website. Such a disappointment
Love, love, love this restaurant! Everything is perfect: staff, atmosphere (specially in the conservatory) and food!
I love this restaurant, beautiful food, lovely atmosphere, attentive friendly staff and an amazing wine list.
Not impressed. Arrived well before other diners and in spite of having booked we were given the first table just inside the door. Food was unremarkable and some of it sparse. One of the (senior) staff was somewhat offhand. Won't be back and won't recommend.
Had a very nice meal for two here. Wine list was huge and the maitre de very knowledgable. Food was delicious and cooked to perfection. Atmosphere was completely romantic as described and whole experience was spot on.
We ate here 14.07.12 and had a 3-course lunch for £26.50 including half a bottle of very decent wine. We have eaten at many top restaurants (including The Ritz on 16.07.12) and have to say that the quality at Clos Maggoire is, in our opinion, not bettered anywhere. The restaurant is lovely, the service attentive and food out of this world. Its not expensive either for food of this quality - highly recommended
I booked a table for myself and my partner for 6pm so we could have a quiet, romantic meal, before going to the ballet at 7.30. When I rang the restaurant to book I explained it was a special occasion, and I booked a table in the area with the trees and fireplace and was told we could have the pre-theatre menu. Due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances at work my partner was 10 minutes late. I rang the restaurant in advance to say we would be 10 minutes late, and the person on the phone said that would be absolutely fine. When we arrived we were shown to a table in a different part of the restaurant, crammed into a tiny corner, practically at the entrance to the street, which had little or no romantic atmosphere at all. When my partner asked why we no longer had a table in the area we had originally asked for, they explained they had given it away to another couple because we were late. They then presented us with the a la carte menu, and made a fuss when we asked for the pre-theatre menu, saying because it was 10 past 6, and service had ended at 6, we could not have the menu. The waiter eventually asked the chef if we could order from the pre-theatre menu, and he said it was fine. However, by this time I was very flustered because not only had this taken 10 minutes to sort out and I was worried about being late for the ballet , but the restaurant staff seemed annoyed at us, and although polite during service, we felt rushed through dinner, and like we had been an inconvenience to the restaurant. They forgot to bring us bread, we had to pour our own wine and when we left we waited 5 minutes for someone to bring us our coats, and no-one came, so we had to find the cupboard ourselves and get all our things, as did other guests. The whole experience made me feel very stressed. It was not a pleasant start to an evening I had been planning for months, and I certainly would not say it was the most romantic restaurant in the UK when they make no allowances for diners being 10 minutes late. The food, however, was very good, and had we been made to feel less like a nuisance and treated curtly for something out of our control, it could have been a lovely evening.
