This popular pub on Eyre Street Hill used to bill itself as 'the finest ale and eating house in Clerkenwell', but these days it's moved away from a classic gastropub vibe to embrace the dude food trend, with the kitchen currently overseen by We Serve Humans - a more than reputable burger outfit.

They make their beef patties with brisket and short rib, and serve them alongside options such as the 'Ian Beale' (beer-battered cod fillet in a bun with house tartar and rocket), the 'V2' (chicken breast burger, special sauce and lettuce) and the 'Well'ard' (a Kurz & Lang bratwurst with onions, ketchup and mustard).

The drinks list goes big on cask ale, and the wine list tops 16 varieties. Keep an eye out for live music and special events, too.

Venue name: Gunmakers
Address: 13 Eyre Street Hill
Opening hours: Open noon-11pm Mon-Fri. Food served noon-3pm, 6-9.30pm Mon-Fri
Transport: Tube: Farringdon tube/rail

Great for an after work drink. The room upstairs is lovely and cosy in the winter months if you can get a table.

Used to love this place - nice little pub off the beaten track that does a good selection of different beers. Was generally busy but not overcrowded and people spill onto the street at the front during summer when it's warm.

Think it's changed hands in recent months and the quality has dipped a touch but they still do a wonderful scotch egg!

Is there a finer pub in London? I doubt it. Delicious ales, inventive menu and charming staff (particularly the brunette). Makes me want to move to clerkenwell!!!

Been working in Clerkenwell for a couple of years now but only came across this place via a recent Londonist article. Popped down for a swift half at lunch and found the landlord to be polite, helpful and very friendly. Food looks good too and ales were very tasty. Will be checking it out again soon, quite possibly this evening...

The exterior looks good but the interior is modern and characterless. The beer choice is small but what we did have was very clean and good. However, sadly the very rude Landlord spoilt what would otherwise have been a good evening, we certainly won't be going back again, there are many other decent pubs in the area run by real Publicans who enjoy their work and creat a great atmosphere.
