Café society on Swains Lane is ruled by Kalendar, the friendliest of the street’s nosh shops and also the most popular: punters will hover expectantly if you’re lucky enough to grab a sunny terrace table in the warmer months. Breakfast here is big with the locals, on the weekend the café is buzzing with young families and people reading the Sunday papers.
On our most recent visit service was a bit sloppy. The eggs of our eggs florentine were poached too long, so that instead of being greeted by a runny yolk, our fork got stuck in a crumbly centre. Staff offered to replace the dish immediately, but returned with eggs florentine on toasted muffins that were burnt ten minutes later. 'Kalendar breakfast', a traditional English brekkie, was more pleasing. The deli counter also serves a reliably delicious range of delights, from artisanal cheeses to tempting stacks of cakes bought in from Konditor and Cook.
Coffee, made with beans from the Monmouth Coffee Company, was not very skillfully made on our last visit, resulting in a watery coffee that was too frothy. The freshly squeezed juices are therefore a safer bet - which you can also order as mixed combos.

Always was a little slow and service is "casual" - but now portions are kid sized so really quite expensive, plates are cleared - WHILST YOU ARE STILL EATING.
Had the worst meal in a long time here! Decided to order the lunch special which was advertised on the chalk board - fried squid with rice and a spicy tomato sauce; awful everything cold! It was not only my dish, my niece’s polenta and aubergine dish was also cold and bland. Puddings weren't any better, I ordered fruit crumble, which when it arrived looked more like muesli. Service was pretty bad, bordering on patronising. I too fondly remember Cafe Mozart, what a shame!
I'm go grossed out I just have to warn everyone! I would have written to them but they have to email address. I used to go here all the time, just went in for teas and a snack and it has gone seriously down hill. There were 2 flies buzzing around our table, the loos looked like they hadn't been cleaned for weeks, dust every where, no soap, dirty floors, I could even see in the kitchen which had the filthiest floor ever. I will not be going again! Plus I went in on a Monday morning so your would think they would have cleaned after the weekend rush, they definitely hadn't!!
