Just getting into this cult destination can feel like cause for celebration. Not only is the queue epic, but Meat Liquor employs ‘good cop, bad cop’ strategies to manage it. On our visit, Bad Cop was played by a giant bouncer who prowled along the line ink-stamping hands: a ploy that stops late-comers from joining their friends mid-queue. Good Cop, meanwhile, was a doe-eyed girl with a tray of the famed deep-fried pickles to quell munchies. Inside, it’s dark and violently loud: more hell-raising nightclub than restaurant. Signs point out the rules (‘No suits’, ‘No ballet pumps’). The graffiti murals are occult-themed, and the staff heavily tattooed. The Deep South cooking is gutsy stuff, with the likes of crunchy-coated ‘bingo wings’ served not only with a terrific Louisiana-style hot sauce but an authentic blue cheese dip. There are cheese steaks and dogs, though the real show-stoppers are the burgers, with their firm, bouncy buns and juicy, pink-middled patties. The excellent ‘dead hippie’, made with a double-layer of patties, also benefits from finely diced raw onion, molten cheese, shredded lettuce and thick slices of gherkin – not forgetting the mellow and tangy ‘secret’ burger sauce. Sides are no side attraction, from perfect skinny fries to pillowy onion rings, and, as you’d guess from the name, staff make a mean cocktail too.

We went here on a Thursday after work, arriving at around 6pm there was no queue and when we left just before 7 there was still no queue, though it was very busy inside! This is not a place to go for having a romantic date or catching up with friends, as you can't hear each other very well...however if what you want is a really tasty burger cooked just right and feeling good in your hands, thin fries that remind you of mcdonalds in a good way, onion rings as big as your head with the perfect ratio of batter and sweet onion, well made and interesting cocktails, friendly staff and quick service - this is the place for you! Don't go here for conversation or for something revolutionary - go here to eat a great burger and then leave with a smile on your face. Next time I want to try the buffalo wings!!!
Part of the Birthday bonanza that me ol' dear took me on was a visit to a "premier eatery". She's gob-on for the ol' magic sauce so was well into the rehydration side of things in this place. Had a burger and some fancy chips. Good burger, though crumbled like the walls of a black death pit in the path of a crossrail drill, tasted better. Smiley waiter and a soundtrack loud enough to drown out the "tube's full o' burkha's" squawk o' me better 'alf. No 'appy meal for 'er but an 'appy meal for me good self. Beats the southend Maccie D's anyday.
When it first opened, there is no doubt that the burgers were amazing. Have just spent ages queuing in the freezing cold for something which is no better than any chain. Just don't bother. In New York or any other major city, this place would be closed within a week. As a Londoner, I'm embarrassed.
A table of four on us went early on a Friday evening & waited for an hour and a half to be seated. We wouldn't mind but the food was cold, burnt & the order was wrong! The tables were also pretty dirty and so were the bathrooms! It is no way as good as other burger bars in London. Really overrated.
This was delicious. I went in for lunch on a weekday, no waiting, given a good spot to watch the crowd. I’m a huge fan of burgers and I heard this place was pretty good and they did not disappoint. It’s a very dark place, middle of the day and you have thought it was night.
I got some onion rings, cheese fries and a bacon cheeseburger and a drink. It’s a great feed for under 15quid. Thankfully I was there with a friend and together we almost finished all the food… You could easily spend a lot less and get a good feed, I was just excited and attempting to try everything on the menu, fried pickles next!
I’ve heard a lot about waiting for tables and long lines, there was a rope outside so it apparently gets pretty busy.
A must for burger and beer fans.
The food is indeed fantastic; the wings are perfect, the burgers are great, the slaw is probably the best I've tasted but the decor? Like being in a horrible dream world created by a fourth-form set designer meant to look edgy but that just sets you on edge. Add this to lights so low everyone had to use phones to see the menu, music which was loud to start with and then bizarrely turned UP AS THE PLACE QUIETENED DOWN AFTER THE LUNCH RUSH and staff who despite being very friendly and seemingly capable were running about like headless chickens (a lack of organisation on the management's part?) and you have somewhere in which everything distracts from amazing food by being as demanding as a 5 year old child with ADHD. If we were talking about the food I'd give it 8 or 9/10 but the decor/ambiance/bedraggled service drags it down to 6. Takeaway option soon please?
Best burger I've had in years. Quite like the egalitarian queuing system, the mental decor and the vibe of the place. I'm docking it two stars because there's a fine balance between "too cool for skool" and rude indifference (not from our waitress though who was friendly and attentive if a very overstretched). Not a place for young children or fine diners. Suits seem to be tolerated at best. But did I mention the best burger in years?
Terrible service and contrived decor means I won't be coming back. Take a leaf out of the Apple Pan in LA, which operates the same queuing serivce but actually manages to be nice to customers (yes people who pay you!) at the same time! Amateurish at best.
Its a cool place. Welcome to new York. I visited mid afternoon so was fine - not healthy stuff but enjoyable. If you like inn and out burgers you're in the right place. I was told to get two burgers as they are small. I did and drank a few well executed drinks. Managed to spend 60 a head so not cheap. Good addition to London though. Get involved it's the place to be.
Great food if a little pricey, but very filling. Restaurant was superbusy and service was excellent...except for one incident which came very close to ruining the evening. When we arrived we were told to sit where we could fit in. We sat down at a large table for eight (just two of us). Apparently this was just fine. We kept an eye out for something a little more incognito and sure enough a table for four became available. No sooner than we'd shifted we were accosted by a waiter who became particularly nasty about the fact that we hadn't sat where we were told to. When I calmly explained that we were told to sit where we could fit he got even more angry; stating that he never would have told us to do that. As I calmly explained that he wasn't the waiter who'd shown us the table he stormed off, returning soon after to demand we sit elsewhere. So we found another spot. I don't have an issue being told where to sit in a busy restaurant. I do have an issue with being accused of lying, dealing with a bad attitude and being treated with contempt. We won't be returning.
Burgers were small and very good -diner style, sloppy and cooked well. Had it not been for the people that worked there, I would have certainly returned with friends. Service was terrible and (senior) staff were actually rude trying to be witty. Food took over an hour, order was all mixed up and when we asked about it, guy in charge came back with an obnoxious answer that shocked us. This is no way to run a place, you can seem to run a "rough burger joint" with the flavour and music of the American South but there's no need to be rude or vulgar to diners... !
I agree with last reviewer ...do not go to this place if you are with your mother or are over 40 you really won't like it ..It is loud , dark , brooding ,edgy and you will have to queue at peak times ....plus it is essentially a great bar that sells the best burgers and chicken in london....it will not appeal to people who think Byron is cutting edge and who insist on linen and cutlery with their food ...! The burgers however as previously stated are the best
Ok, firstly: this place is not for everyone. Don't bother going if you hate loud music, or if you insist on eating with cutlery. You won't like it. I, however, freaking loved this place. Great cocktails, awesome food, good service and chilled out vibe. The artwork on the walls is impressive, and really added to the atmosphere. Prices are reasonable, too. 5 stars for sure.
Terrible. Queued for 1 hour on a Tuesday night. We were waiting for some friends to arrive (they did, after we'd stepped through the door) the really rude bloke told them they had to go to the back of the queue while we waited at the bar for them. Totally ridiculous door policy. We just left. Completely over-hyped and pretentious. After having the experience in South London. It now seems like they will become victims of their own success.. Can't recommend a 1.5 hour queue for a burger to anyone.
I went in the week it opened and for my first experience of a 'Yianni' burger it was great.... well the food was. I had the chicken burger and it was amazing, the same with the crispy but doughy onion rings, well worth the money paid. However, the service was terrible. First we had to try and get our own table while the guy who was supposed to be seating people was spouting how good the place was to some guy. We ordered quite quickly and my friends starter (though he wanted it with his main and said this to the waitress) came quickly, we then waited almost 30 minutes for our burgers and this was only after i asked the waitress where our burgers were. She went to check but didnt return for another 5 minutes, but with our burgers but no apology. We were then blackmailed into a tip because of the comment on the receipt. My thoughts are that the food is great but waiting 30mins for a burger and trying to get the attention of a waitress constantly isnt. They need to work out what type of place they want to be, this isnt a wagon anymore and people will soon get fed up of it. I will give them another chance because the food is great, but i hope the service has improved as my lunch hour is just that...an hour.
Eating in between lunch and dinner on a week day, if you can, is the best time to go, as it's quiet and getting a table isn't a problem. The burger itself is exceptionally good, but cheese is just a bit gloopy and cheap. I don't think it's the 'best burger in Britain' at all, not even in London.
Pretty good burgers, rubbish service. Whilst the burgers are good, not worth the long wait, and the staff have to be nicer to people queueing - we're not waiting for fun!
Such a shame. Delicious and copious food, ruined by dreadful service. Or rather by the rude and agressive managers, because the waiting staff were perfectly nice. They are clearly overwhelmed by their own success at the moment, and are taking out their stress on the customers.
This Place is Great. I can Learn to live with a AmeriKan Burger Joint Like The Red Robin. This Place Copies Slightly. Now The Golden Arches, NO The USA Culture Nah. Even tho I was Born in the USA I Left for good reason. Tho Its an ok Place to visit.
Was really excited to hear about Meat Liquor opening and went along for dinner at the weekend. Had to que outside for ages, i couldnt even use the loo due to it being 'full'. Once inside - (because getting in doesn't mean you get a table) we had to find our own seat which was a bit of a nightmare! Once sat down (finally) the music was so loud we had to shout over each other to discuss what to order! Food wise both our Burgers were really good, i have to say that it was really oozeey and meaty. Our sides and cocktails were good too (a little bit small but good none the less) as a whole although i didnt think it was anything really really special especially for the £££. I didn't like the decor or the music and that's what really ruined it for me, i thought it was a bit try-hard cool and would of preferred it to be simpler. It would of been great to of been given a table when your arrive - to keep up with the element for me that going out for food is special and i want to be treated that way. As far as going out for a burger goes, Meat Liquor seemed to be an overstyled Diner. If your part of a group it could be quite fun, but for a table of two it can be a bit too much.
Very poor indeed, we would not go back. This place has been over hyped by reviews and seriously under delivered. The queue outside should have given us a clue, 35 mins wait on Tuesday night usually a good sign you would think, not in our experience. The reason for the queue was due to the extremely slow service, 15 mins to place order and a further 20 mins for any food. When it did finally arrive after a prompt, it was poor to say the least, very greasy, no real flavours and everything tasted the same. Sorry Time Out but I am not sure your reviewer knows what a good restaurant looks like!
great concept, great ambience, great (LOUD) music, ruined by SHIT service. Don't bother going there to eat or if you want to talk.
The restaurant looks great but I left disapointed and hungry. They haven't got organised with service yet and have a totally idiotic door policy (and a rude sweaty maitre'd). Be warned if you plan to go there as even if you have a table they will make anyone in your group who turns up later queue outside while hasstling you to vacate your table! Which we did as we didn't want our poor friend to have queue outside by herself while we waited inside, hungry! I liked the look of the food though so would like to go back but only if they get their customer service sorted first!
The burgers are great and I recommend the phili cheesesteak if you've had enough of the burgers (if that is possible), I found the decor rather forced and would disagree that it is like the Lower East Side! The red,black and white walls just don't do it for me. The major drawback so far, and I have been there three times, has been the level of service, which has been shocking, while the staff are friendly, they are inexperienced and were all over the place, I hope this improves! Perhaps there wouldn't be such a queue if the waiters brought the bill when it was asked for rather than 30 minutes later after several further requests. The bill says " 'cheers mate' is not a tip", to the same degree a girl rushing around holding a notepad, looking confused is not a good waitress.
I had fried pickles, fries and a cheese burger. The burger surpassed my high expectations, it was lovely. The fried pickles were amazing too. The beer was from Flying Dog, pretty impressive but only one choice. Having the whole Flying Dog range would be outstanding.
