A super-sleek Japanese fusion restaurant.

Rendered sleek, smart and stylish to within an inch of its life, this Japanese fusion restaurant teeters on being a bit too tasteful. With the exception of a dinky origami chopstick rest, which appeared courtesy of a shoo-in for London’s most charming waiter, it was just a bit characterless. Luckily, it bucked the usual restaurant trend of smarter the place, smaller the portions; flavours were pretty on the mark too.

Filo Shrimp Tempura, wrapped in angel hair vermicelli instead of the traditional batter, was crunchy and delicious, and came with a nicely spiced mayo. Crispy Calamari with black olives, if a little oily, was still light – although without the dipping sauce, it would have been bland. It was the wild card order that proved the winner: Shiromi Yuzu Tomato. The thought of crushing delicate sashimi with tomato and truffle sounded so intriguingly awful that I had to try it. Clean-tasting and tart, it rested on a wonderful granita flavoured with shiso (a Far Eastern member of the mint family) and the whole dish was beautifully balanced. However, things took a turn for the disappointing when the signature sushi arrived. An exhausting smorgasbord of flavours, it was trying way too hard.

If Oliver Maki were to heed Coco Chanel’s advice (‘Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off’) and lose some unnecessary ingredients, it might just turn out to be brilliant.

This place is exactly what you want a restaurant to be - superior food and service but without all with the stuffiness. In fact, you could easily come here after work but it'd also make a great place for special occasions where you might want to impress. If you do the latter, go for the "jewel box" - it's sushi served a creative twist and will get you brownie points before you've even tucked in the mains.

Dining in Soho is always great fun as long as I'm not standing in a queue! Fortunately Oliver Maki operate a booking system! Plus points, the service and tasting menu we had was excellent and the tasting menu is to be recommended!

Oliver Maki ... *exhale* what to expect I hear you say?

Quality !!! Not quantity but quality!! I came here for my sister's birthday and we came away blown away but the utter deliciousness of the food we consumed.. I highly recommend the matcha tiramisu for dessert. Its absolutely sublime.. The only reason it didn't get a five star rating is because the glasses of English sparkling wine we had were barely filled ... I mean barely!! Looking back we should've said something as we paid £10 per glass.

Come prepared though as its not your ordinary under £20 dinner .. Minimum needed I'd say is £50 per head ... Don't worry you won't regret it.

This is a small and cozy sushi restaurant in the heart of Soho. The selection is very fresh and colourful and the Mediterranean gin and tonic accompanying your food very refreshing. Oliver Maki has also been known to welcome a celebrity diner every now and then, including Jaden Smith. Booking is advisable as the place tends to get quite crowded in the evenings. In spite of the iPad based menu, which takes a while to navigate and somehow makes ordering unnecessarily complicated, this is a sushi hot spot worth a visit.

It may be obvious that you are paying extra for the gimmicks and fancy gadgets, but there are no complaints on the service or the food. If you are able to swallow the higher price, the food will sure go down a treat.

The tablet menus are not the best for navigating through, and while the photos are useful, it somehow takes away the surprise when your elaborately prepared dish arrives.

It's a fun place to try out if you're feeling something less ordinary.

A sushi restaurant from Kuwait that offers hamburger sushi setting up shop in London just did not sound right to me, but then I saw a great review by Giles Coren in The Times, so curiosity led me to check it out. I'm surprised to admit that I was impressed...

We tried the Taki Maki - a unique combo of unagi (eel), salmon, white fish and candied yuzu with an olive oil & soy dipping sauce and Oliver Maki signature rolls made with brown rice and served on an olive oil and shoyu sauce. These were so good! The brown rice gave the rolls a totally different texture to regular sushi and a slightly nutty flavour and went amazingly well with the olive oil. Each piece was topped with a different tasty garnish. Fine work Oliver Maki! Oliver Maki is a tiny little box of a restaurant, but worth a stop for these. Service was excellent, just a shame the restaurant space does not match the prices and the quality of the food.
