RSJ can appear to occupy a world of its own beside the artsy agglomeration and traffic of the South Bank. Its mellow cosiness seems more akin to somewhere much further upriver: Chiswick, say, or even Henley-on-Thames. The style and softly coloured decor haven’t changed for a while, but this is probably how regulars (who rely on the restaurant for relaxed lunches and pre- or post-theatre dinners) like it. Food consistently displays high levels of skill and refinement in preparation and the sourcing of seasonal ingredients. From the excellent-value all-day set menu, a ham hock terrine with piccalilli was lovely, earthily textured and subtly flavoured without a hint of excess acidity; pan-roasted chicken supreme with olive oil mash was not so outstanding, yet still very pleasant. Splash out a bit more on the carte and you really see what the kitchen can do, in dishes such as the fresh fish of the day, or a distinguished côte de boeuf. Another special feature is the unique, fabulous wine list, one truly worth exploring. Drawn almost entirely from the Loire Valley, much of it sourced directly from producers, it has been assembled with expert discrimination; prices, by current standards, are a gift.

Quite possibly the WORST dining experience I have ever experienced, on all levels. Firstly trying to book a table for five was difficult, the promised call back never came so we had to chase. We then arrived at the restaurant to a frosty disinterested welcome and after waiting 15 minutes were herded downstairs to the basement in what was essentially an annex of the next door restaurant with whom RSJ shares a kitchen (Sticky Mango). After a long wait the waiter came to take our drinks order and when asked whether he would recommend the Cabernet, the reply came back "I don't know, I don't like cabernet". First course eventually came (45 minutes after entering the restaurant) and the dishes were all cold and the duck egg on top of my risotto was hard boiled (supposed to be poached). Obviously the food was prepared carelessly and allowed to sit for a long time before serving as this carried on in the main, beef rendang which had no spice whatsoever, was cold and served with cold congealed rice (please remember that this restaurant's kitchen also cooks for a Thai restaurant). We then sat with our plates in front of us until the sauce had literally congealed, until someone noticed and took them away.........After that it was very easy not to pay the service charge, a thing I have NEVER done before.

So in precis....intensely rude/disinterested service, virtually inedible, carelessly prepared food and a hideous atmosphere which we couldn't wait to get away from. A truly dreadful experience which was expensive to boot (for what it was), CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Took clients here for a Friday business lunch. I have to say the food was extremely good and nice to enjoy cuisine of a very traditional but high quality nature in a family style restaurant as . The service was also good but it really had to be since we were one of three other tables and clientele on the other tables were of a, lets say, "very reserved" nature. To say it was quiet is an understatement...you could hear a pin drop which made for a rather stuffy atmosphere but I'm guessing it could be a different experience in the evening. The decor is also a little jaded.

Overall I'd recommend for the food but for lunch at least only go if you're looking for a library-esque atmosphere and not if you're looking for flash surroundings.

Was looking for a food option on the Southbank that wasn't an overcrowded chain restaurant and so booked a table for a Friday night, same day, at RSJ. Yes, the tables are close to each other and the acoustics in the restaurant, especially in the corner, are less than favourable. However, the food made up for this a hundred fold. Difficult not to smirk at reviews from people who order pasta and mushrooms then complain about having bought the cheapest thing on the menu. I had duck breast, medium rare, which came with a little red cabbage and a thin delicate potato crisp garnish, with juniper jus etc. It was perfect, incredibly tasty and less than £20. My friend had the Lamb, which he also raved about. For pud, I had blood orange tart with plain chocolate sorbet. It was incredible and perfect after the duck. Service was measured and attentive. We didn't drink wine, but the organic apple & elderflower juice was very good. So nice when a good non-alcohol drink is on offer. Will definitely go again. So highly recommended, I created a timeout profile just to review it.

Went tonight for a family meal. Impeccable, unobtrusive service, delicious food, very extensive wine list. Highly recommend.

Small rooms with the tables almost touching one another mean that it's incredibly noisy and impossible to have a conversation over your meal. Pasta with wild mushrooms in parmesan sauce was bland. Sparkling wine was very good though.

We just stumbled across this restaurant so gave it a try. A truely dull ambience and we honestly thought the food was a bit odd. Stale bread, mushrooms with sea bass that didn't work at all and a pork escalope, the like of which you normally find in a Med. beach bar. No ice bucket for a bottle of white wine on a warm evening and 12.5% service added but can't remember it being mentioned on the menu. Surprised at Timeouts 4 stars.
