An amazing waterside location far from the maddening crowds, with assured cooking, considered ales and a global wine list. Beware stiff prices, though.
Typical of the ETM chain, the Gun is an attractively spruced-up pub, with attentive staff and stiff prices. The focus is on making both diners and drinkers feel at home. The restaurant menu is available throughout – not just in the smartly dressed dining space – and there’s a standalone bar menu too. The handsome bar counter is lined with real ales (Adnams bitter is a regular, and there’s always a guest ale), but also offers cocktails and a global wine list. Cooking is assured, if not quite good enough to justify the prices: slow-cooked Middle White pork belly with battered skate knobs, carrot purée, sprout tops and ginger and port jus cost £19 for a small portion – making sides such as chips or dauphinoise potatoes a neccessity. Also, £9 seemed a lot for a (not very) devilled chicken liver starter. Better value is to be found on the bar menu, where £7.50 buys a substantial ‘fish finger sandwich’ (more like goujons in toast) served with plenty of tartare sauce, and a decent steak sandwich with caramelised onions and horseradish cream is £9.50. Lightly themed (prints and a few antique pistols), with wooden floors, white walls and an open fire, the Gun is a fine spot in any weather, but its USP is the terrace. Refurbished in spring 2013 with fold-back glass panels, this is right on the river, looking out over the O2. Neophytes, beware – the pub can be tricky to find first time around. I've eaten at The Gun a few times now and love it. The food is delicious, the staff are fantastic and the venue is gorgeous. Perfect for team lunches and after work drinks. The terrace in summer is great for relaxing by the river. Highly recommended
I organised a large client dinner here. All who attended absolutely loved the place: the view, the food, the service. The events manager was extremely helpful and thorough. She gave a range of suggestions to fit our needs and recommended The River Room which is absolutely beautiful. We'll definitely recommend The Gun, and may even be making another visit there in the near future.
We had an wonderful afternoon at The Gun. The private dining room was beautiful and had a real “wow” factor with the view over the river. The food was magnificent and the service was quick. The privacy allowed us to continue our business conversations and the atmosphere was light allowing everyone to open up and get to know each other. Overall a fantastic afternoon in a beautiful location with great food and company.
We recently held a 40th birthday party here and it was absolutely fantastic! The management were amazing at helping us plan our event, nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We had ordered bowl food for our guests, and the food was divine - all our guests are still talking about how yummy it was. Service was really friendly and the evening was a total success thanks to them. We had access to the outside terrace so the views over the Thames looking over at the o2 Dome was rather special. I would totally recommend this pub for parties or even if you want to pop in for a pint and some food. You won't be disappointed!
We booked the River room for a team meeting and dinner afterwards. The staff were very helpful with the organisation in the run up and attentive on the day. Great views and excellent food. Would definitely come back.
I love going to the Gun, i go there personally for a drink, it's great for a quiet, cosy drink in the winter by the fire or in the summer to sit by the river with a Pimms. I also book the Gun for private dinners for work. The staff are always really friendly and helpful and everyone who attends the dinners have always told me how much they enjoyed going to The Gun.
This is an amazing venue. I had lunch there a couple weeks ago and i was supposed to review it but i hadnt got round to it. The food as lovely i had the fishcake, my husband loves the beer there too. The terrace overlooks the thames and it feels like your on a boat i have to visit at night it must look amazing!
We celebrated our wedding dinner here and it was one of the most memorable days, thanks to The Gun. =) We had the private River Room which if you have a party of less than 16 is completely worth booking. The view is amazing and the atmosphere is so surreal. We had our own waiter, who took care of our every need. The food was delicious (def try the lamb with thyme). Overall thanks to Anna and the team it was absolutely perfect! Definitely Recommend!
I booked the Red Room for a party of 30 people. The room was really cosy with a lovely roaring fire. Drinks that we pre-ordered were set up in the room for when we arrived and a waiter was provided in the room to pour the drinks and order more. The service was incredible and the staff were really attentive and friendly. It really was a fantastic evening and the room had a very reasonable minimum spend so I cannot recommend this venue enough. We will certainly be returning at our earliest convenience.
I booked the private dining area upstairs for a surprise 40th birthday Sunday lunch and everything was perfect, the food was exquisite, Staff were superb (attentive and effective) and the room created an ideal setting. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves so thank you to the whole team. I'll certainly be recommending the venue to others and will keep it on top of my list for our next big event.
Went back to celebrate a special birthday 44 years after my 21st. Then it was an East End pub loved by dockers and local families long before Docklands, O2 and Canary Wharf skyscrapers came into being. Then we used what is now called the Riverside room for a party where a buffet of sausage rolls and sandwiches was served at 2s and 6d a head. This time it was, of course, a little more expensive but it has still got enormous character. The furnishings are more luxurious now so 12 of us dined round an oval table under the chandeliers looking out over the Thames as people rowed or sailed past. Great service, views and food. A superb private setting for up to 16 people in fantastic surroundings. Thank you Gun. Docklands wastelands no longer seem so alien. I will be back for the next memorable occasion but I better not wait 44 years!
I'd organised a retirement party at a restaurant in Greenwich, but two weeks before the event, and without prior warning, the restaurant cancelled my booking because they'd decided to run a "special event" that evening! With nine hungry guests to feed, I panicked, but then had a brainwave; I contacted the very helpful Anna who found me a table for ten at The Gun. It was a warm evening, so I wanted my guests to have drinks on the terrace before our meal. A quiet word and a couple of the bar staff quickly volunteered to set up a table and chairs for us, They then happily brought us our drinks, even though the terrace was not strictly covered by waiter service. For us it made a very relaxing start to our evening. Full marks to the bar staff. At the appointed time we went to our table in the restaurant, where we were attended to by friendly staff. The meal proceeded at a well judged pace - it can't be easy getting ten main courses, with side dishes, to the table all at the same time, but the kitchen managed it! We had a lovely meal, served by efficient staff for whom nothing seemed too much trouble. All my guests told me afterwards how much they had enjoyed the whole experience, which for me was the object of the evening. Well done The Gun; it was a faultless, thoroughly enjoyable evening. Thank you for making my retirement party that extra bit special!
Whatta a gem of a place. Came for a cozy Saturday lunch on a not so great London day, stayed for a pub dinner too! The terrace is amazing if you can get out there. Lots of quirky rooms with so much to see. Definately recommend
The Gun is my favourite pub, fantastic food and the staff are really friendly. Would highly recommend.
We came here after our teams "Offsite" for dinner and drinks, and we booked the River Room. The food was absolutely fantastic, as well as the staff. The view we had was amazing, and gave talking points when we could see people walking over the O2 (although they did look like matchstick people). Would definitely go back with my colleagues and friends.
Fabulous venue, amazing party and made all the better by their teams hard work, organisation and Communication! We both and all our guests had a wonderful time and delicious food. Thank you for all your help and all the very best in the future.
I work in the vicinity of the Gun, where colleagues have taken clients for a relaxed and informal dinner or lunch and always gave good reviews. When my in-laws were visiting london I decided that we should try it out for ourselves. All started out well with a confirmation of my booking for 3.30 that day (sunday) from a member of the team, which is pretty standard in most places, but its the small touches that make the big difference. We arrived at the Gun and were seated, first impressions were good with some spare tables. We were given the menu and wine list and then offered some bread, next came a waitress from the kitchen to the table and stated there is no beef. Confused as we had only just been seated asked if she had the wrong table. She advised us that the chef had just advised there was no beef and to let us know, quickly followed by a waited to take our order. I had to ask if we could order drinks first before we ordered. The menu is sparse, from memory 6 or 7 main course to choose from (including the beef) and 2 specials - of which one was off also. I asked the supervisor what was available as there seemed to be a limited selection to choose from, that was met by a torte reply of everything that is not sold out.. this should have been a sign of things to come with this member of staff! Without having numerous years in the restaurant business, it doesn't take someone of Michel Roux calibre to work out the sunday roast will be the most popular dish on a sunday, having regularly eaten sunday lunches around london in various "gastro" pubs - none of which have sold out at 3.30 in the afternoon, astounding. Starters and Mains ordered, father in-law ordering wine we settled in for our lunch. The waiter came back to allow us to taste the wine, not going back to the person who ordered. I said it was fine, and poured our table, placing the wine cooler directly to the side of my cutlery on an already cramped table. He returned a few minutes later to advise he had selected the wrong wine, did we want to continue drinking the one that had been poured. Not a massive issue, but it does make sense to get the person who has ordered the wine to taste it and confirm their choice. Pretty basic stuff. Starters were good; small things like a muslin cloth around the lemon to squeeze onto the crab were absent, leaving the pips to be fished out of the dish. Basic attention to detail missing. I would expect half a lemon to be put on the side of a dish in a pub or chain restaurant, but not in an establishment marketing itself as "a gastro pub". Mains were nice, the rabbit was tasty, but the crackling on the pork of my partner and mother-in-law was like tough treacle - again most places remove the crackling to get the "right" crispiness and not overcook the pork. Again pretty basic stuff and replicated all over london and 5* hotels in the UK i have dined in. Deserts were very average, with two of the party leaving part of their dessert. WE wanted to finish off with coffees, again no order was taken at the time when the deserts were taken and trying to get the eye of staff was an olympic event. As the supervisor was placing napkins on tables i asked if we cold order some coffee, that was met with a face of "you want me to take coffee orders" type of look. At she turned her back to walk away another member of staff was facing her and we couldn't see what was mouthed or what expression was made. I called her back over to ask if there was a problem with ordering coffee, that was met with a brisk "no she always laughs at me because i don't put the orders on the system". One thing I am not is naive, and cannot abide people thinking they are above others, or the audacity to attempt to manipulate the situation. The only time she seemed animated in the actual customer(s) with anything less than pure distain was when my father-in-law asked where she was from; to which she trotted at pace Spain (Barcelona) but had spent many years working in New York and would be going back there soon as the weather is much better and is not grey and depressing like london. My advice - GO! Go quickly! You are no loss to the service industry in London and I cannot imagine where you would be working in New York, as in all the years i have visited NYC I have never had "service" anywhere close to the offering of this person; and i struggle to understand how any New Yorker would put up with that attitude there - it simply wouldn't fly. Overall at close to £65 a head the offering and service were that of a bog standard tourist trap restaurant in london. The food was good, nothing more. I have paid significantly less in London for a far more enjoyable surroundings and "gastro" experience. I will not be recommending the Gun to any of my colleagues or peers in the Bank where I work. I frankly wouldn't put my reputation on the line. Shame.
I can highly recommend the Gun for a wonderful day out. The attention to detail was really something from start to finish and the food was amazing. We ate in the River Room and were given the full history behind the venue too. After eating we went to the garden area where we played ping pong, enjoyed the beer festival, sat on deckchairs looking at the river - we felt as though we were on our holidays by the sea! Will definitely be back for a visit and the complimentary taxis from Masthouse Pier or the tube are a real bonus too.
I organised a work dinner for 8 people. Anna the events manager was fantastic- and very patient with our many changes. We arrived and had drinks in the back pub with a roaring fire- which our visitors from Spain, France and the US sincerely appreciated. The food was great and the service impeccable. The boss was very impressed- and I am definitely booking again!
Excellent gastropub. Unique atmosphere. Comfortable rooms. Great views of the Thames. Interesting food and beverage selections. The 5 course Valentine's day tasting menu was superb. Highly recommended.
I booked a private dining room (River Room) at The Gun for my partners 30th Birthday. Trying to coordinate an event with a large number of people can sometimes be quite difficult but thanks to the events organiser, and the service staff, the process ran very smoothly. The view from the room was breath taking, the food was beautifully cooked and presented and the service was brilliant. I have no hesitations in recommending this place and will definitely be visiting again.
We had a fantastic birthday lunch for a group of us at The Gun over Christmas - we managed to snag the smaller of their private rooms - and had the most amazing time. Dedicated and incredibly friendly service, great food, lovely wines, amazing views and ambience. I would heartily recommend the Gun for anyone, whether they are looking to celebrate or just enjoy some delicious food in fab surroundings.
We had our Christmas lunch at The Gun this week and it was lovely. The staff were great and very attentive making sure we were well watered and fed. The food was delicious and wine was great to match. We were fortunate to be housed in the River room which had fantastic views and was beautifully decorated. Will definitely be coming back.
Myself and 8 others visited for our work's Christmas lunch. We had exceptional service (especially for those with specific dietary requirements) from start to finish, we weren't rushed through our courses, which can be the case in other restaurants at Christmas time, and there was a brilliant selection of wines. Highly Recommended!
This is one of the best places that I have been to for a Christmas lunch. We were booked in to the River Room which was great with the most amazing views over the river. You could not ask for better service, food and atmosphere. We continued in the bar afterwards - just great. Highly recommended.
Couldn't have asked for a better setting for some organised work drinks near the Wharf. Staff were helpful and attentive before, during and even after the event and the rain even stayed away! Thoroughly recommended.
Brilliant venue - I organised a dinner here for 21 people in the private Cabin Room, with drinks first in a reserved area on the terrace (which has lovely views). The staff there were brilliant and very flexible at short notice. The food and wine was excellent as well and got great feedback from all those who attended. Many thanks for a great evening!
Excellent lunch in the Cabin private room overlooking the river.. Food was superb, service was very efficient and nothing too much trouble as we were a party of x20. Would definately re-visit!
I held a client event for 22 people at The Gun on 20 June we had hot canapes and Pimm's on the Terrace. It was an excellent event, views were great, food was even better and the service was excellent, the staff were very friendly and professional and nothing ws too much trouble for the. Would definitely use this venue again - my clients were really impressed.
An excellent evening in the semi-private Red Room by the team. They enjoyed the whole evening and the food and staff were great! Would definately recommend.
An excellent evening in the private dining Cabin Area. Staff were fantastic. Food great. Good views from the terrace area. Very well organised and I would highly recommend visting this venue.
Delicious food, attentive staff and a cosy, romantic atmosphere. It's our favourite Gastropub in the Docklands.
It's not the best food in London, although the food is consistently good, it's the list of other attractions that make this my favoutire place to eat in the Docklands. The view is impressiive, the decore is tasteful and the whole place is dripping in history. Not least of all, the staff are professional, attentive and friendly.
We went here for our Christmas and historic meals on this occasion have learnt not too expect too much. The gun was absolutely faultless. The atmosphere was charming, very relaxed which was exactly what we were looking for. The food was stunning (every course for all the diners at our table). I cannot praise the waiting staff enough, the effort was outstanding. I cannot receommended the Gun enough and cannot understand the rating that Time out have given as is definitely not reflective of the 5* service.
We went there for our work christmas lunch. The food and service were both superb - highly recommended.
We went there for a sunday lunch and were kindly proposed a table on the terrace overlooking the river. The service was excellent, and the pork belly delicious. Strongly recommended.
Had an excellent family lunch on Sunday in the private Cabin Room. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed - we were wonderfully looked after by the staff and would not hesitate to recommend The Gun. There are fantastic views of the Thames and the O2 and a lovely heated enclosed terrace. All in all a great venue either for a family get-together or just a drink and snack in the bar.
