The dark-wood panelled interior probably seemed retro when Toff’s was established back in 1968. This Muswell Hill stalwart is a true one-off; the corporate slickness comes from being a long-established family business that knows what it’s doing and knows that people like it. Little changes here, but we were pleased to note that, unlike many London chippies, the business has joined the Marine Stewardship Council and sources fish from sustainable stocks.
Fish is cooked to order and batter is the norm; egg and matzo, or grilling, bring a surcharge. Starters include fish or vegetable soup, deep-fried camembert, fish cakes and avocado vinaigrette. Our main-course grilled king prawns with herby butter dressing were lovely, but seemed pricey at £15.95 for a modest portion. No complaints about the gigantean battered haddock, however, which arched across the plate as though in yoga posture. Fat chips were fabulous.
To drink, there are a dozen wines, three bottled beers and a range of spirits. In the unlikely event you have room, finish with Marine Ices ice-cream or one of the school-days puddings.

Reliably fantastic fish and chips with all the trimmings. And if you don't want the whole deep fried experience, you can have your fish grilled instead. Lovely staff too.
I visited London last week from the USA, was there 6 days and 3 of the 6 days, I had a lunch special at Toffs! Amazing food, an authentic environment and their great owners make it my favorite place to eat in London, and the prices make it worth the half hour tube ride from Kensington. 😊❤️🇬🇧
No compromises in providing the best fish and chips in Town either in the restaurant or as take away. Great staff too.
We have been going to Toffs for over 10 years and it has always delivered excellent meals. Great choice, friendly and fast, but not rushed, service. Also great value. The gold standard fish and chip restaurant against which others have to compete.
Me, my family, my friends! everyone who lives in muswell hill loves toffs!
The BEST chips money can buy
I am an american living in Muswell Hill, Fish and Chips were a fairly new thing to me. These guys know what they are doing, i'm totally addicted. On friday nights it has become a tradition to go to Toffs. Brilliant food, great service.
Exceptional and friendly service, fresh and very tasty fish with all you can eat chips. Challenging portions! You need to make reservations on Friday, if you do not want to cue up! Clearly 5 stars from a German fish lover.
This place must have gone down hil, because I heard so many good reviews of this place but have always been disappointed. I live in Muswell Hill so this is my local place for fish and chips, but unfortunately I have to avoid the fish completely. The batter is never as crispy as it should be, the one I had last night was chewy which is just wrong. I will say the chips are not bad.
This is our local, we eat there regularly and have never been disappointed. We go for the lunchtime special paying the £1 supplement for delicious grilled cod (it also comes with a choice of old fashioned batter or a thin and crispy matzo meal batter) with the freshest, hottest, best chips ever, mushy peas, a cup of tea and bread and butter, superb
