Hype Coiffure is a hype.
With a name as audacious as theirs, it undoubtedly would be a difficult name to live up to.
But this Brixton salon doesn't even come close.
I left with an overwhelming feeling from a lady named Anne that she didn't much care for my custom or care that I be satisfied by the service provided.
The issues I faced were; price, waiting time and complete lack of customer appreciation.
I feel quite strongly that the prices quoted by Anne were based on nothing but mere trifles.
I went in for simply a treatment and cornrows.
A quote of £60.50 quickly escalated to £95 and then to £92...
I must say she did bring out a calculator when she created the sum of £95 but I state with great confidence that this price was not based on a formula or set pricing just mere fabrication, and holding a calculator was to give the impression that something was being worked out, when in fact numbers were being pulled from thin air.
I'm fairly certain that this is to be true as her own colleague questioned not only what the price was, but how it was arrived at.
To which she remarked "I told her the price, I told her already, £92" well Anne, you magicked up £95 actually but thanks for the £3 saving.
I arrived at the salon at 1.15pm finished the steam part of my treatment at 2.45pm and left the salon at 4.25pm. Need I say much more.
Anne told me that I couldn't get any style just straight back big cornrows because she only booked me in for an hour and they were going home early. Well if that was the case I should've left the salon with my treatment still in my hair as it took an hour just for that alone.
I think it's fairly unheard of to refuse a person the full service for which they're paying for.
In saying this there were two lovely and accommodating stylists who wished nothing more than to see me leave pleased. I'd like to say their names were Natalie and Dorothy, so massive thank you to them both. I believe they sympathised with why I may have found their colleagues attitude entirely inappropriate. If it wasn't for their pleasant and professional manner I'm sure I would have entered into heated words with their less than personable manager.
Needless to say, I will not be returning.
I have been going to Hype for a few years now, and I always have the same thing done relaxer retouch, treatment and trim. The cost has remained the same over the last few years (£100 to £110 more recently).
However, today I was asked to pay quite a bit more. When I asked why I was told "you had two types of relaxer and your hair is long".
While I understand the stylist using two different relaxers on my regrowth, I do not understand being charged for having "long hair" as I have have never been charged for this before. My hair has been the same length (arm pit length) the ENTIRE time I have been going to Hype.
After today I will never set foot in a Hype Salon again.
I wanted highlights and decided to go to a professional - as I knew it would be risky to try and achieve the honey blonde highlights on my own. Although the stylist made me feel comfortable I didn't leave with the colour I showed before hand (not even close). What I found MOST disappointing was I tried on 3 occasions to speak to management/colourist about correcting the colour. Each time I was reassured I would receive a call back. 3 weeks to date NOTHING! Definitely wouldn't recommend especially if you are natural. They have no training on how to blow dry it without ripping it out.
It was once the type of salon that would keep to allocated appointment times, offer free beverages and generally seem to care about customer service. However over the last year or so the waiting times I have experienced have been very disappointing for a mid-range salon. Recently I waited over 1.5 hours for my appointment to start. When I politely brought this to the manager’s attention he was shockingly defensive and dismissive - was told to put it in writing for which I did (again in a polite manner) and there was absolutely no reply. It is a shame as the staff are very nice, but if management don’t care about the experiences of their long term customers there is not much hope in improvements. After 5 years loyalty I will be finding a new salon. I know a couple of people that feel the same way about the service levels and they have also decided to look into other salons as unfortunately Hype no longer provide service levels to match their prices.
Steer clear! Had the Brazilian keratin treatment took 6 hours because I kept being left while other peoples hair was being done! HELLO what's the point in an appointment. Also tried to rip me off tried to charge me 2 times the price on the price list. Just to add the treatment didn't take to my hair the first time. Go somewhere else.
