Although one of the more famous living British playwrights, Howard Brenton appears to have decided to spend his golden years making smaller-scale work for punchy fringe venue the Jermyn Street Theatre. Following 2017’s ‘The Blinding Light’ he reunites with the theatre’s outgoing artistic director Tom Littler. Based on real-life eyewitness accounts, ‘Cancelling Socrates’ follows the one and only legendary philosopher. Set in 399 BC, Socrates is revered, but also an annoyance. An Athens recovering from war and plague would prefer to be done with his incessant questioning; and the great and the good make a plan to shut him up. Heavyweight actor Jonathan Hyde stars as the man himself.
