Kanjoos - The Miser

Theatre, Fringe
5 out of 5 stars
(1user review)

Comedian and writer Hardeep Singh Kohli and Jatinder Verma, artistic director of Tara Arts, have translated Moliere's The Miser from 17th-century France to a contemporary Indian setting. There, Harjinder makhi-choos ('flea-sucking miser') is hoarding his wealth by adhering to Gandhi's principles of minimum dress and food.

Just saw Kanjoos at the Tara Theater last week and enjoyed it immensely! Witty zingers imbedded in snappy dialogue, lively and intelligent acting by an energetic cast, spare but precise sets and costuming: all serve to reveal a very good production of remarkable professionalism for a theater of this size, in my experience. I highly recommend it for an evening of grinning and sometimes outright guffawing. The very small theater requires a small sacrifice in bodily comfort, but it repays this readily and abundantly with dramatic fun. Well done, Tara!
