Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Arcola has been the longest shut of any London theatre, albeit with the fairly substantial caveat that it built an entire new outdoor venue – Arcola Outside, still very much running – in order to provide a more coronavirus-secure theatregoing experience.
But in May it will finally throw its doors open again with a new play written and directed by Barney Norris, probably the biggest name playwright to currently enjoy an association with the Dalston institution. ‘We Started to Sing’ follows a single family over three decades as they spread out over England and Wales and their shared lives changes as they become more distant.
