A rubbish bar? Why on Earth would I want to go to that?

Aha! You’ve been fooled by the title. It’s not rubbish as in ‘bad’. It’s an experience – happening as part of London Cocktail Week – where the drinks are made from rubbish – or, more accurately, from what people think is rubbish. See, it’s a clever play on words.

So what exactly am I drinking? Dregs? Gutter run-off? Do you not think this sustainability craze has gone a little too far?

The drinks are made from ingredients that would otherwise have been discarded. Things like skins, stems, seeds and peel – definitely not dregs and gutter water. It’s all organised by zero-waste spirits brand, Discarded Spirits Co., who are experts at turning ‘waste’ ingredients into a luxurious cocktail experience.

Hmm… ok. Do the drinks actually taste good?

Indeed they do – these cocktails are packing some serious quality and craftsmanship. Using Discarded’s three spirits (Discarded Grape Skin Vodka, Discarded Banana Peel Rum and Discarded Sweet Cascara Vermouth), The World’s Most Rubbish Bar has the world’s leading bars queuing up to create the signature (and delicious) serves. Of course, the fact that they’re cutting edge when it comes to zero-waste food and drink is a sweet bonus!

Huge players like The Nomad, Silo, Lyaness, Artesian, Eve Bar and The Gate from Glasgow will all be on hand to guide you through these sustainable, super-sippable cocktail innovations. There’ll also be a tasty tour through Chardonnay vineyards, Latin American coffee fields and Caribbean jungles, something for everyone.

Okay, this does sound pretty great. Is there anything else apart from fancy sustainable cocktails?

There sure is. The World’s Most Rubbish Bar is actually more than just a bar. The World’s Most Rubbish Bar’s creator, Discarded Sprits Co. is on a mission to promote a zero-waste and sustainable future. The bar itself, therefore, is both a bar and an experience.

A bar as an experience? What will this involve? Learning?!

There’ll be some learning, but we promise The World’s Most Rubbish Bar will be much, much more enlightening than your usual showcase of a spirit you’ve had a million times. This is an immersive experience, designed to showcase how ‘waste’ can be transformed into art, furniture and design. You should walk out with a new perception of waste; you might even have a refreshed passion for sustainability, your optimism might be reinvigorated by the ingenuity of people’s efforts to save the planet. Plus, it can be tasty work, turns out.

I’m inspired already. So how much does it cost?

For the two-hour experience, one ticket costs £20 – which, given that it includes the equivalent of five full-sized cocktails, is rather good value. Plus, to make you feel even better about consuming delicious sustainable drinks, all proceeds will be donated to Felix Project, an anti-food waste charity.

Not able to make the event? Don’t fear, follow Discarded Spirits Co. on social and keep your eyes peeled to find out how you can recreate The World’s Most Rubbish Bar experience from your own home!

The World’s Most Rubbish Bar is open at The Ditch, Old Street (EC1V 9LT), from the 15-17 October with two daily sessions (6pm-8pm and 9pm-11pm).

Tickets are available now.
