We won’t be going back to the cinema for a while as theaters across the county remain closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a socially distant night at the movies. Two pop-up drive-in experiences are coming to the 305 this week, giving locals the opportunity to catch a flick from the comfort of their cars.

The first one takes place this Friday, May 22, at Dezerland in North Miami (14401 NE 19th Ave). The sprawling indoor theme park is converting its parking lot into a full-on movie-going emporium—complete with restrooms and refreshments. Weekly showings are scheduled for Fridays at 5pm now through July 3, featuring family-friendly titles such as Jurassic Park and Sonic the Hedgehog. According to the site, food and drinks will be available for purchase though we’re not clear as to where it’ll come from. Presumably, it’ll be a similar menu to what’s served inside—think burgers, hot dogs and french fries. Tickets are available online for $30 per vehicle (plus fees) and they’ll be sold first-come, first-served.

On Sunday, May 24, Miami Beach hosts theirs at the parking lot on Collins Avenue and 46th Street (next door to the Eden Roc Miami Beach). Playing With Fire starts promptly at 8pm and everyone attending must be in their cars by 7pm. In fact, once you arrive, you won’t be allowed to leave your vehicle at all—and that includes trips to the restroom, which won’t be available. If you’re used to slipping out of the theater mid flick, you’ll need to wait until you get home to relieve yourself or stretch your legs. It’s worth noting that the city-sponsored event is only open to residents, so you’ll need to show proof that you live in Miami Beach or have friends who live there to join.

With the future of theaters in Miami still unclear, it’s only a matter of time until more pop-up drive-ins crop up. Though with summer nearing, we just hope the opportunities for air-conditioned viewing remains even if we’re not watching indoors.
