The last two weeks have seen a renewed surge in the global fight against racism, sparked by the US protests following the killing of George Floyd. The Black Lives Matter movement has inspired mass marches, powerful art and even the toppling of statues. Now the Global Pride event scheduled for this month has announced that its 24-hour live stream on June 27 will work with Black Lives Matter to amplify Black voices across the world. ‘All Black Lives Matter,’ said organising committee member Natalie Thompson.
The all-day live stream of performances, talks, films and messages of support will be hosted on YouTube by choreographer and viral star Todrick Hall, as well as via iHeartRadio’s YouTube channel and the Global Pride website. Trans icon Laverne Cox also joins the line-up of artists and political figures, alongside US presidential candidate Joe Biden, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, Irish taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London.
Time Out is an official media partner for the event, and is running a month-long Pride Worldwide campaign in the run-up to June 27.
The Global Pride event was announced in April after the cancellation of Pride marches in cities around the world, including the fiftieth anniversaries of Pride in San Francisco and Los Angeles. A global network of Pride organisations is going online for a worldwide celebration of the diverse LGBTQ+ community. Millions of people are expected to join the event from home, with subtitles provided in multiple languages.
All speakers and artists have donated their time, and any funds raised by Global Pride will be distributed to Pride organisations facing financial trouble.
