Knives Out director Rian Johnson has confirmed that Daniel Craig’s suave sleuth Benoit Blanc is gay.

Johnson made the announcement while discussing his sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, ahead of last night’s  London Film Festival closing gala.

The director was asked if a scene showing Blanc cohabiting with another man meant that the detective was gay. ‘Yes, he obviously is,’ replied the Star Wars: The Last Jedi director.

Discussing the actor who makes a top-secret cameo as Blanc’s lover, Johnson added: ‘There’s nobody in the world I can imagine bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with.’

Craig added: ‘No spoilers, but who wouldn’t want to live with that person?’

Fans of kitsch murder-mysteries can find out the identity of Blanc’s partner when Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery arrives in cinemas on 23 November. It lands on Netflix on 23 December.

Alongside Craig, the all-star cast of the sequel features Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hann, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr and cameo appearances from the late Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim.

Both Sondheim and Lansbury are credited as playing themselves, with the movie’s director confirming that Glass Onion will be dedicated to their memory.
